new guy saying hello, with few questions

Hi all my first post just got 2.2tdi 03reg with sat nav and 6 speed what a car for the money really pleased.
did have vaux vectra 2.5 200bhp with 4 speed auto think my new nissan would thrash it round town shame it cant mach it on the motorway tho

got a few questions tho

is my car n15 or n16?

is their a haynes manual for tdi engine? dont mind if its a primera or tino as long as its same engine

its due a service nissan want £250, have done all car work myself in the past, is the tdi an easy diy engine?
thinking of changing all filters oil and glow plugs, or should a take it to some local garage and get service stamp in book its only done 41k so when i sell think not having service history will nock the price down a lot.

and my gearbox grinds a bit when putting it into 3rd and 4th gear, will do this also if the handbrake is on the clutch is fully down and i go to select 3rd of 4th, makes the grinding sound like the clutch is not fully down, but all other gears fine and the clutch feels fine even in stop start in traffic and pulling away, any one got some ideas?
Thinking the clutch adjaster is set wrong just needs slightly re adjusting.

has any one chipped a tdi hear the results are great for most tdi engines £300 chip easy 20bhp+ but whats the fuel results like? im getting 45mpg at the mo will it go down a lot?

cheers all

its an Almera N16 and I think its a phase 2 as well. if the head lights are clusters then its phase 2.

I guess the service is straight forward its not going to be hard to be honest just like any other car/diesel.

Welcome to the club qpete72,

Usually when the clutch cable needs adjusting, the biting point on the pedal is too high, and the clutch doesnt disengage properly causing crunching and difficulty getting gears. This is something you could check. When you press the clutch, there should be about 12-15mm of free play in the clutch pedal before you feel the biting point.

The other possibilty is that the 3-4th gear synchromesh in the gearbox is worn and unable to match the shaft speed correctly to smoothly engage gear. Some fully synthetic gearbox oil 'may' posssibly help a little bit.

As for chipping, as well as the performance increase, you will actually see better MPG under normal driving aswell due to the optimised fuel maps.

What i will say is make sure you run the car on high quality engine oil (fully synthetic) and always try to let the turbo warm up before giving it any 'beans' and also cool down for a few minutes before switching off the engine.

N16 Turbo Diesels have a been known to have turbo failures due to overheating and failed VGT mechanisms, so taking the above precautionary simple steps should help prolong its life. Signs of turbo whistle indicate that the bearings are on their way out.
If the turbo fails your looking at a £1K+ repair bill, so look after it!

Hope this helps.

Dont forget to put some pics up in the members rides section!

i would say the clutch is fine, if it was your clutch it would grind with any gear you select, id say your gear lever adjustment is off, or the engine sway mount is on its way out, both relatively easy to sort if your handy with a spanner. dale could be right on the synchros but on a 41k mile box id be surprised.

tdi chips just up the boost and fueling, if your not hard on the boost then youll still get the same mpg you were gettin, boot it and obviously your gonna use more fuel, dale mentioned the better maps and improved mpg but im sorry but in real life situations it just doesnt work that way, motorway driving you might be 2-3 mpg better off but round the town you'll be worse off, aftermarket maps produce higher boost and advance the fuelling to meet this boost before the pressure is too high, this is to aid cooling and prevent lean detonation, hence why chipped diesels produce more smoke just before boost.

but if you are gonna chip then only make sure you go about 3 psi (around 30 bhp) anymore than this start looking and uprated intercooler, injectors, better oil lines, the turbo itself is of good design, its the oil feeds that are its weakness, use a 5-30 oil not 10-40 and you should be sweet.

if it starts up fine then i wouldnt bother with the glow plugs, but as with any diesel (or petrol for that matter) regular oil, fuel and air filter changes will have your car goin forever, my old 405 had over 300,000 miles on and the engine was still great ( just the rest fallin to bits)

now, got any pics?

as for the pics it completly standard finished in silver nothing special to see really.

well i just found out that my car had 6 year 70k nissan warrenty that can be transfered into my name so i got 3 months left so hopefully can get the gearbox or clutxh sorted by nissan for free, only problem is the guy who owned it before me has to agree to send a letter to the warrenty people to say he no longer owns it, sure most people would be happy to do this just hope this guy will do it for me.

my guess is the syncromesh as it downshifts fine without crunching, if i cant get the warrenty sorted i will try a gearbox oil nd filters change as this has been great for sorting crunching noises on other cars iv owned,

any ideas on the haynes manual? i know theres one for the petrol so can use for brakes gearbox body suspension etc, but what about the tdi engine?

Iv never owned a diesel before so dont know about servicing it, but going from a v6 with two 3 cylinder lumps 24 valves and no room to move the smaller nissan engine will be easy, it took about 6 hours just to change spark plugs on v6 had to take most of engine aprt plus romver brake vacume and loads of electrics never buy a v6.

thanks for the advice on the turbo will change oil on weekend and take it easy from cold

Welcome to the AOC mate :) I've got a 2.2 as well but am a novice when it comes to engines so I'm not much help, sorry!

Someone on here remapped or chipped a phase 1 diesel, and took it from 108bhp to 150bhp  but i tried to contact the guy to find out more but I think he sold it a while back so doesnt hang around here anymore.

Welcome to the club qpete72,

Usually when the clutch cable needs adjusting, the biting point on the pedal is too high
how do i go about doing this mine is a bit to high the clutch dosent slips just to high cheers ????

any ideas on the haynes manual?

im getting a machanic to look at the grindind noise soon i will let you know what the prob is, the biting point is about half an inch of the floor so hopefully will just be clutch adjuster but il let you all know.
