New member from Nottinghamshire and hoping a new owner of N15 GTI

Hi guys

firstly great forum. My brother had a Almera gti in the past and I absolutely loved it. Well I have been offered a Phase 1 GTI in black and hopefully be getting it this Sunday. I just have a few questions I like to ask if any of you can help. The one am getting is on a R plate with only 67k and price at a £1000 is this cheap for the car? what sort of mpg around town are you owners achiving?
It is really a credit to its last owner of how well it is kept and there is no issues of rust in the rear arches. Only problem that the owner has told me is the rev counter plays up. It go up and down when it pleases and when you start it sometimes goes all the way to 6k, but the owner says the engine remains idling fine and not over reving..I have spoken to a few friends who are mechanics and they advice me that its either the entire clock needs replacing or the disturbtor needed changing is this true. At the moment I have a Peugeot 307 2 litre xsi on a 2002 and the owner say he would do me a straight swap is this really a good deal. Odviously you guys being a Almera would probably say yeah but I just need a honest opinion.

The almera is standard apart from a green cotton cone filter and a full scorpion exhaust, here is a picture of the car in question

Looks clean and at that milage id go for it.

Rev counter needs to be replaced, you can change the whole clock unit or jist the rev counter itself.

Its been lowered too.

Bin the pug and come the reliable side of motoring.

heres a original ad from the owner
Here is my 1997 phase 1 black almera gti for sale.
10 months MOT 3 Months TAX 67,000 Miles on the clock
Bought this about a year ago off a family friend, he knew the previous owner who bought it off a disabled bloke in 2005 who had the car since new. The car unfortunately doesnt have alot of service history, alot of the servicing was done by myself and the previous owner did the servicing himself to. It has just had a full service a few months back, replace engine oil and filter, gear box oil, spark plugs and fresh coolant has been put in. I cant prove that its been well looked after on paper but you know its been well looked after by the way in drives, performs etc, engine runs sweet and smooth, gearbox is smooth through all gears. The car is mostly standard and untouched other than a full stainless steel manifold back system fitted last year, brand new manifold and downpipe and a second hand stainless steel scorpion cat back system and also just has a green cotton cone fitted to the intake.
As you can see from the photo's its a pretty tidy car for its age, i can confirm that there is no rust on this car, i know alot of these seem to rust away, but the underside of this car is very clean and all under the carpets thoughout the car has been checked and is very clean also. The paintwork on this car is fairly good for the age, its obviously not perfect, id have it all touched up if i was keeping it but thats because im picky. The car has alot of meat left on the pads and all tyres have good tread on them.

the rev counter is a common issue on phase 1's yes.

I know he says no rust, but you need to look behind the side carpets in the boot, around the seatbelt mounts and the top of the wheel arch.

The clocks are a piece of piss to change, you just need a Phillips screwdriver and there's 2 or 3 plugs in the back

Bang any rust with a screwdriver....if it's gone, you'll know about it!

Judging by that picture, you're going to have to have a really good poke around as it is technically another rotten one, albeit not by much.

welcome in mate nice looking car there, the pic of the rust doesnt look too bad, but as simcard says take a good look in other places that mainly can be sorted with a tub of kurust and a piece of sandpaper as for the clocks two screws at top of the outer surround and three holding the clocks in place then three plugs at the back, you may need to undo the two under stereo and unclip the center plastics to get the surround off but its an easy one as for replacement clocks for it i have a set up for grabs if and when your wanting to replace them

cheers for the info on removing the clock. yeah I would like to replace the clock, what sort of price are you looking for

thanks

yh the rev counters are a fault on the phase 1's and now with the n16 models out there parts and mods are getting scarce if you can get hold of parts like full driveshafts including cv joints in good nick then keep a spare set handy, other consumables such as belts you can get from motorfactors on dare i say it ebay (be cautious with ebay parts) and check here first mate either for advice or check the forsale or cars breaking sections
if in doubt just ask
