New Member:)

Hi to all in AOC, just thought i better introduce myself. Bought my first car almost a year ago now, and hell yeah its a mera :P, only a wee 1.5 but its a decent first car. I've been looking recently into doing some work on it and want to start with cosmetics. i'm thinking about lowering it on coilovers and was just wondering what coilovers people are using at the moment.

Thanks to those who read:) much appreciated

Welcome :) Most on here go for BC Racing and Meister R. Both brands very good, Meister ride quality on UK street arguably better. But you'd win with either brand.

Thanks for the response, the handling at the moment is pretty appalling so i want to get that sorted first. I'll have a look at the Meister R coilovers, i was thinking about them but didn't want to spend that much if they weren't that good. I'm gonna look more into the cosmetics after I get the handling sorted. I've noticed that a few people on here have got Jap/Aussie import bonnet and grille which look smart, but I'm having severe difficulty finding them for sale, any way you could help with that?

How do you rate the 'Technics' and 'Apex' coilovers? Good ride? Good quality parts?

Where about can those brands be bought for the N16 Almera?

The BC and Meister are quite pricey but I don't see anything wrong with using them on the street. They're fine even on a 1.5 as fun in a car isn't just about straight line speed. Good handling can be appreciated too. I only mentioned them because that's what people use on this club, and they're very good products, and I can't speak to the quality and ride of the brands you mentioned :).

Sry dry sense of humour guess ur not ready for me yet so no offence ment. Anyway Rory can get Said Apex here. No Damping options on these but sometimes u can have to much tweaking and make things worse having to end up going back to default setting anyway, regardless its a cheaper option without making a hash of ur camber for the first timer.

Found another option with damping even cheaper and Koni another decent upgrade £498

Cheers for the response guys:) I've been looking at the MeisterR Zeta-R and they seem like a good option. They are a bit pricey but with the plans i have i think there the best. i don't see the need to buy lowering springs if i change my mind down the line and get coilovers, gonna be wasting enough money as it is;)

Good coilovers transform an N16. That said.. for the price of a set of good coilovers you could upgrade to a 1.8 or a smokey oil thingy with more power. 1.5 can be fun on the twisties on decent rims, tyres and suspension but there is no justification (other than, perhaps, tax and insurance) for keeping one when you realise you like Almeras enough to keep one. The only exception I can think of is of you were to turbo or supercharge a 1.5 which I would love to see.

If it's what you really want go for it. All I'm saying is think a bit before sinking the same you paid for the car into making a heavy, underpowered economy-focused car handle and look a bit better.

Speaking from (N16, 1.5) experience.

One option you do have of course like Wraith says is that if you do like the Almera then you can upgrade later and move the mods to the new car! So for now you can enjoy amazing handling even though your don't have the power. It is of course not something to jump into because of the money, so think wisely.

Hey, welcome to the forum!

I'm a fellow 1.5 N16 owner, also bought as my first car when I passed my test last year. I've gone down the route of mostly sticking to small cosmetic mods like adding a spoiler and a set of alloys, as well as recently lowering the car on up-rated factory dampers. It handles so much better with the dodgy standard suspension changed, and is much more fun in the corners.

All I would say is be careful spending big wads of cash on your first car. Obviously it depends on your finances, as well as how long you intend to keep the car and what you plan to do when it comes to eventually replacing it. As Ed said, if you do end up getting another N16 and all the major parts are easily transferred, then great. But i know i wouldn't want to splash hundreds on mods for a car that's going to be changed a year down the line.

Just think it through. Can't over emphasize the transformation in handling you get with better suspension setup though, definitely a good way to go!

It's not about finding the cheapest possible option. Rory seems to express a genuine interest in coilovers for their superior performance and ride, and doesn't see to be too put off by their price (esp. considering V-SpecII is selling a cheap second hand set). So discussing using lowering springs is redundant. We all know lowering springs are cheaper, but it's for good reason :).
