new N16 owner

hi all,

I'm after buying an N16 Nissan Almera, 2001, with a 1.5 petrol engine. Apparently its a little dead.
I've read a little and have picked up to remove the cat, route a cold air intake, and get a new air filter.
I will also service it with new oil and filter.

anything else i can do?
it has a timing chain i believe, unusual i thought, most cars have belts. Is this something that needs adjusting every now and then, to take up slack, or does it need to be replaced completely?

thanks for reading,
redd .

Welcome to the club.

Not unusual for Nissan to have a timing chain. If it's having trouble running then could just be the tensioner whoever these are known to stretch, especially in the phase 1 (pre-2003) 1.5 engines. If this is the case a new one is needed. Kits can be bought on eBay if you can fit yourself or know someone who can to save on the labour.

For performance a lightweight flywheel worked well a member's 1.5 a number of years back, otherwise the usual breathing mods can help (exhaust, header, air filter). But you may be better off saving your money and either swap a 1.8 in (easy straight swap) or even convert to the 2.0 SR20 engine from the previous Almera GTi (N15), which very doable with a few people having successfully converted theirs now.

Liam and happyharry to name but two who have converted to an SR engine.

cheers for the reply, appreciate it. may i ask,

what about the ecu?

will those engines bolt straight up to the current gearbox?

im willing to try these things, i have messed around with engines before, mostly diesel engines on 4x4's.
but the electronics would frighten me.

also, are headers readily available?

sorry bout all the q's, if i may ask one more, whats the deal with viewing the tech sections? do i need to have a minimum post count or similar? i looked around but could not find it explained.

regards,
redd .

In the Membership section I think it explains. We have a paid membership system that gives you access to discounts, group buys and tech info otherwise locked out on the forums. Well worth it, you end up saving more money than the membership costs and some :)
