New owner, New driver MPG question

Ive been driving just over 9 months got my first car 52 plate Nissan Almera S 3dr 1.5 petrol.

Its regarding MPG recently ive been getting the feeling im putting in more and more petrol in than usual now i have been doing a few more extra miles lately but i still get the feeling.

So anyways like i do every payday i like to fill up or put in around 40quid i decided to log everything.

The fuel light just came on i put in £40 i got 36L i did a total of 170 miles and it came on again the fuel light by my calculations i get that around 21.5 miles per gallon which i have been told is very low.

Is this true and any solutions or possible causes?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks Adam.

That is shite mpg, perhaps it needs a service... I sometime get less then 30mpg but thats only if im late for work or cant be arsed waiting behind slow drivers =P

Do you change at redline often lol!

That is abysmal MPG ! There could be a variety of things wrong with your car - from sticking brake calipers (check your rears) to a damn good service needing done, or a faulty sensor (O2) or even a semi-blocked exhaust (cat break-up or baffles in box knackered) ? Try one thing at a time & work your way through these items. There has to be something causing it.
The 1.5 isn't known for getting great mpg as it's low-powered in a heavy'ish body. But low 20's is not right - even in the middle of London !

Thanks for the replys guys, i bought the car july 2009 it had just had a 60k serivce and an MOT in june i have done less than 3500 miles since ive had it (guess i could bring the service forward?)my main purpose of the car is to get to work and back.

With that being said i work exactly 2miles away, 2 there 2 back. Now im not a morning person so i tend to cut things close commuting i.e leave quite late so i just make it in 8:30 on the dot.

Now i will be honest i aint no boy racer but i do tend to accelarate quite hard and change gears very quickly, my route to work is busy with traffic with plenty of turns and traffic lights along with the odd speed camera so i never go above 40mph.

Now i know im a new driver and i dont have much knowledge on mpgs but like i mention is as of late past few months i have been noticing im getting no mileage to the gallon :(

Well your problem might just be the fact thats its only a two mile drive, your car runs rich when its cold, the compensate for cold oil, cold water and coolant and to heat up the engine, usually takes 10 mins for an engine to heat up properly. My vzr gets better mpg than your 1.5, but take the car for a long drive, you will drfinatly see a dramatic improvement in your mpg

Hi all, i do about 2 miles to work then 2 miles back and my 1.5 sve(53 reg) mpg is bad! i dont race it(i dont think you can race it ..too underpowered) but on longer journay the mpg is 40 to 45 mpg on the motorways, so not too bad .

p.s i would love to try a 2.2 sxe, just to see the differents in power etc.

2 miles probably isn't enough to get the engine upto proper operating temperature, engines don't usually get there full potential MPG until then :)

Wouldn't be too worried about crap mpg on short stop start journeys, if your getting 40/45 on motorways then that tells you once your cars at proper operating temp on a good run you get good mpg :)

hi psycho-eddie, thanks for the input, yes you are right once the car is rolling i think the mpg is good. i do like the car, i think you get a lot of car for your money and it looks nice:)

It could also be driving style, it's about staying in between the right revs for economy, like a GTi gets really good MPG if you stay under 4krpm.
As said, town driving can be very bad on fuel

Hi all again, i stay well in the lower range revs and change gear before i hit the 3krpm....i drive like a saint(honest) but still the mpg is bad for town driving and before anyone says: have you checked your brakes, i have(got new brake pads all around) and it's been service about 3 mts ago.........still love the car just a shame it's poor in the mpg in town thats all folks or maybe i more mad at the price of fuel.....i think that's it, more then what the car does to the gallon.....greedy ppl bumping up the fuel price!
