I have a 1.4 ambition 5dr, i have the standard 14" rims fitted, thinking of upgrading, what can you all reccomend ensuring I also get a nice smooth ride still, are 17's a viable option for this or should i go to 16's??

go for 17"'s mate, they will fill the arches more and they look nicer. even though it will slow you down a bit, are you bothered about speed?

16"'s are ok, but tyres are very expensive!!!

your choice mate, i think 17"'s minimum for the meeras big arches! Many are running on 18"'s, which look better, but may not be a viable option for the 1.4 owners!

how badly will it slow it down?? And why will it slow it down?? thought it would be quiker!

I would say 16's if u dont wanna lose speed!

17s dont really fill the arches - have u seen the state of mine??lol Someone on NPOC described it as a 4x4!lol

well they fill them better than 14"'s lol!

any car that gets 17"'s and aint lowered is gonna av the 4X4 stance!

answer to the quicker thing:

you have a larger rolling radius, so it will take slightly longer to accelerate, your car may feel more sluggish, but you will probably have a higher top speed (by a little)

plan on finding out soon! ;)

Try to get the car lowered when u get the wheels. I wish i had done both now.

I think the 14" and 17" are near enough same size because of the 17" tyre profile - but cant be sure, should know by now, had the spare out enough times!lol

with a low profile tyre, i wont slow you down
the rolling radius from a 14" wheel with a bloon tyre to a 17" with an elastic band are roughly the same.
It also depends on how heavy the Alloy is.
If i remember correctly, for every KG you add to a wheel, its the equivalent of 2 Stone in your car
get some light ones :)

Depends which wheels you get. 17's with low profiles are only 1 or 2% i think off the Standard wheel size with tyres so the rolling radius aint that different.

Just ur replacing Air & Rubber with metal , so it takes more effort to turn the wheels

Slow you down???

slow down?? you don't want that!!!

gotta admit too, that I thought a larger rim (ie bigger diameter, so more distance travelled per rev.) would result in more speed..... Why the slow down?

ive got 16' OZ superturismo's on mine cuz i didnt wanna drive round like a tractor till i could afford to get it lowered n they were a good deal, it depends wat design the wheels are aswell cuz sum will look bigger than others even if they aint, if i cud afford i would defo go bigger n get it lowered cuz they dont fill the arches

the fact that they are 17's aren't the prob if you drive hard and try and take off to fast with there being usually bigger and grippier tyres be prepared for clutch and gear box trouble eventually (2 yrs 32000 miles 4 clutches and 2 gear boxes  ) but then i do have a heavy foot! oh yeah and don't expect much acceleration in 5th gear
