I've owned my "W" reg Almera three years now and I'm needing to pay it a little more attention lately. The oil pan (sump pan) is rotting out. Is this a typical problem with these cars? I've also been told my exhaust isn't quite typical either because the cat is up on the pipe right off the manifold rather than farther back on the system. Is this typical for UK models? I'n new to these cars as there aren't any Almera's in the States and I've only been here in England for three years.

that will be a yes to both questions, both are correct. the sump pan is an unfortunate problem that lots of people have had, and the cat is right to be where it is 
sump pans are reasonably cheap on ebay anyway, might save you a few quid over getting a garage to supply you one.
saying that, we have a resident mechanic in doncaster who would probably fix you up at a good rate, his user name is 'streaky'... might be worth checking out
