newbie needing a few pointers

Hi guys,

just sold my GTO :(

but i recently bought an electric blue 99 N15 GTi from near Birmingham and I have to say I am really really suprised by the handlin and performance :D

I've read a few threads and I've decided on a few small upgrades.

K&N air filter
Goodridge brake cables (stainless steel)
Lowering springs
Iridium spark plugs
HT ignition leads

unfortunately thats all i can afford at the moment :(

As i have limited knowlege about modding these cars... does the above sound ok? and what else would i need to do or change for stage 1-2 tuning.

I've also decided to upgrade the lights
Xenon head lights..... do they make a difference and what would you guys recommend, White or the metal blue.

Ok and one final question.... I was odering (ebay) chrome front and side indicator bulbs.... and got completely stuck on whether i need opposite pin or offset pin bulbs  and since the car is in the garage I have no way of checking!!

please PLease help!!

Thanks

welcome mate :welcome: . from what ive heard the k&n filters are shit. also wouldnt worry about the spark plugs and leads. standard plugs and leads are supposed to be the best. not too sure bout xenon lights. reckon they would make a good difference as i think the lights on mine are not too bright. as for the pins its opposite. but the offset pins do fit as its what i have on mine. hope this helps a bit. sure others will help you out aswel.

The only thing i can do, is tell you to put out a pic so we can se the beauty!

then i would recomend you'd pay the menbership and read all the threads in the forum for tuning and stuff like that for the Gti engines! You'll find a usefull guide to the tuning there (as a stickey).

Welcome to the forum, now, get you't membership up and running :P
cheers.

Welcome,

To adjust your list slightly.

K&N air filter - Go for the Pipercross instead
Goodridge brake cables (stainless steel) - Good Choice
Lowering springs - Yep
Iridium spark plugs - Dont bother
HT ignition leads - Dont bother

Save your money on the plugs and leads, Stanadard ones are fine and you wont get any extra performance.

Xenon lights, just get some decent ones off Ebay, about 15 quid.

Indicator bulbs - The front ones are opposite pin and the sides have a flat bit that slides into the holder, they're called W5 or something.

I had a k&n (£80) and a pipercross viper(£200 approx) for my last gti and found no difference between the two performance wise but preferred the k&n because it made a better noise, you won't need to waste money on the brakes like that unless you are using the car for track days spend the money on cams or a manifold for better performance, if you must beef up the brakes get cross drilled discs on e-bay for £70 they are also for a pulsar gtir(fit them yourself), if they can stop a turbo'd motor with 200+bhp they will stop 150bhp no bother, ref the lights stick your fog lights and full beams on when you go for a hammer in the country!

I wasnt on about a Viper by the way, the Vector is good enough plus they dont make a Viper for the GTi so you have to bodge one on. The Vector is £80-90.

Stainless brake lines are a very good mod for the money, and combined with decent pads and fluid, better than drilled discs anyday! Standard nissan discs are fine.

And dont tell anyone to drive with their fogs on unless it's foggy, winds me up something chronic that.

you can buy a viper for the almera no bodge work i had one

spend the money you have saved on the brake discs then and buy cams

who is around in the country when you need really good lights because there are no lamposts??

welcome to aoc mate, as above, dont bother with the leads or plugs, as for the induction kit, stick a performance panel filter onto the existing box, i have a aem dry paper filter on mine and i'm thinking of taking it off as it feels slower than the standard air box and filter.

Thanks a lot guys!!

Unfortunately I've already ordered the K&N air filter...
I got a good deal on some performance HT leads and Goodrige brake cables.
the previous owner had a set of Iridium spark plugs which he never got around to installing. I just found out thats it's already been lowered and I also found a receipt for a superchip. I know this is to taboo here so i won't go into its effectiveness.... but is there a way of checking, so i can take it out.

I've seen a few cars here with different front grill's to the the standard one. I've looked everywhere and I can't find anything!!
so ermm where do you guys get your stuff from? :P

I know i might be biting off more then i can chew with this, but i was thinking of a turbo conversion. I was wandering i anyone else has undertaken this before... and generally your thoughts on this. :O

thanks guys

p.s.... I have sent off my cheque and as soon as my baby is back I'll be posting up some pictures.

theres a few different grilles going around ... the one in my avatar is the vzr one, theres the phase 1 and phase 2 grilles ( these 2 will be most common i'd say) then there are other jdm ones, like the vzr one but without the vertical lines through it!
the jdm and vzr ones are quite rare and will cost a few quid to get one!!

as for turbo's you'll get alot of info on that off the sr20forum!!

get some pics up asap!!

With regards to forced induction....
Kev Shek's supercharged 1.4 blew up, was replaced with a N/A 1.6 and was recently sold on ebay
Si2001 made a turbo 2 litre (I think!) which I again think blew up a couple of weeks after selling
almeraSRi has a turbo 1.6 that I think is going ok so far
Jme_GTi has a 2 litre turbo almera GTi-R with a pulsar engine that runs quite well as far as I know
These would be the people to talk to!
