Newbie saying hello and asking a couple of questions.

Hi, I have had my Almera for a year now and love it, it's the easiest car to drive. However, sadly the sump has started to leak and when I asked the guy who MOTed it where it was leaking from he said that it had become porous and was just oozing?! He said it would cost about £250 to replace but I can get a new sump for £50 locally and was wondering how easy it was to fit myself and also if it can be done on axle lifts.
Also Hello :-)
Suzy

Geez 250! What engine?

I'd say on a 1.4/1.6 litre a novice could do it in couple hours relaxed.

Yeah its easily done on axle stands. As Cov says, a few hours work at most. 10 or 12 bolts to remove, clean up the surfaces, apply some sealant, bolt new sump pan on.

Thanks a lot, I've been monitoring the oil loss and it is quite minimal so at half term I will lift her up and have a go. The engine is a 1.4 and most of the £250 is for labour. Cheers. :-)

Is that not like 8 weeks away? If its weeping, then the metal is very fragile. If it get knocked by something I'd be worried that it might dump its contents

Oh right, the man who told me gave me the impression that it would be o.k. for a while, as a supply teacher my credit card has been maxed by the summer holidays but I should have earned some money by half term. I agree that six weeks is a while away but I thought that it would have failed it's MOT if it was that bad. I will do it on a weekend as soon as I get paid.

it could be fine for that period as long as nothing knocks it. I would just be wary and if the low oil pressure light to the right hand side of the rev counter comes on while driving shut the engine down immediately as frankley its a crap pressure gauge and if it comes on its more than likely the engine is now extremely low or empty of oil.
