Newbie... whose gf has blown her engine!

Heya all,

Joined today as gf is in a state after calling me earlier to say her engine went 'pop' and lots of smoke poured out.

She was recovered to a garage - and they called her earlier to say her bottomr end has gone - the cars not hers (tho for those wondering - her bottom end is lovely :) )

Anyway - they are quoting £1k to rebuild it (Tino 1.8 on a 55 plate) and she really is strapped for cash so doesnt want to pay that much esp as a new engine online is about £1100.

Any advice you guys could provide would really be appreciated as with no car she is pretty stuffed for work :(

She is based in great warley, essex.

Thanks very much for reading.

If i get involved with it..... chances are she will need a lot more then a bottom end rebuild!!

Im best kept well clear of serious mechanicals!

Cheers for that link tho... checked the feedback - and all the items they have feedback on are tax disc holders!

Anyone used them for an engine swap on here before??

Ouch!!

Feared as much... she might have no choice as she spent out on tyres and a new exhaust not so long ago .... and if she ditches it to get something else then not much trust in that either - least this way she knows its safe.

Do you guys know of any trusted garages round the Brentwood area who would do it??

If you're buying a secomd hand engine you need to make sure its the right variant.

Check to see if yours has a cable operated throttle and a black rocker cover or if its fly-by-wire throtte and has a silver/bare metal rocker cover, you need to make sure you're buying the correct one!!

In all fairness the majority of people do all their own work, but if you provide a garagw with an engine for 300-400 then you should only have 6-8 hours labour so should work out a bit cheaper :)
