newbie with gearbox whine

Hi guys, just bought a 2000 almera (N15) exhibition, 100,000 miles on the clock.

Just a quick question

- there appears to be a bit of a whine from the gear box, mainly in 1st and 2nd. Is this common or does it spell doom and destruction? If it needs replacing is it a sod of a job or relatively easy. I'm reasonably mechanically complicated.

thanks in advance

John

Check or change the gearbox oil if this doesn`t resolve the problem you`ll need a re-con or second hand gearbox.

Hi, thanks for the replies. The gearbox feels really smooth, not notchy or stiff. There is just a 'ticky whine' in 1st and second. The clutch was changed not too long ago, not sure if this helps with diagnosis.

Anyone have a gearbox for sale?

cheers guys

if it is just the noise from the box i woul have it listened to by somone who knows ( a gearbox recon guy) he should be able to tell you if it is the box for a start then he should be able to say if its bearings, gogs or what ever. he may even say its fine just one of the bearings is a bit dry so making noise.

as for getting a new box use the wanted section, check ebay and looking in ur phone book for nissan scrappers or the web for part finders.
