Its not really a known problem with these engines. Does the engine run fine? Are there any visible leaks? Oil spots on the drive? The first easy main thing to check would be that the oil filter is tight, sometimes the rubber seal can become pinched when there are fitted if oil in not applied to the rubber making a oil leak.
I have a 2003 1.8 S Tino - well I had it for 4 days and then it all went wrong...
The fuel economy went right down to approx 22mpg, then the next day the engine management light came on. I took it to Nissan who said it was overfuelling and burning alot of oil and it is a common fault with these engines. Anyway the piston seals had been destroyed and basically written off the engine and it waould cost approx £3k to sort out...!!
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but just wanted to warn you about this fault with these engines. I hope yours is OK!
I've had a quick look on the old interwebb, and for some reason it only seems to affect the tino, but i can't understand why? are they different engines?
