Nissan Problem

Hi i'm new to nissan ownership i've just brought a 1.5s 2000 almera but it seems to have a couple of annoying problems, firstly the rev counter wont go past 3,500 then it just wobbles when you try and the most annoying problem the engine seems to hesitate when you first start and drive it, then after a couple of miles it's runs fine until you boot it then it hesitates again. According to the limited service history i got it's had a full service and a new crank sensor in Jan'10.

Hopefully someone can help, and it turns out to be a quick fix and not the timing chain i've been reading about.

Many thanks

Danny

sounds like the chain to me, especially as someone has just changed the crank sensor which is the error code it throws up when the chain is going.

MAF will limit it to about 3k i did this the other day change the gearbox in my car and forgot to plug the maf back on and it will not go over 3k. I plugged it back in and reset the code and it was all good. best thing to do is go on ebay and buy a lead to plug in your car (cost me £21 delivered) and pull up a code and then we can help you :-)

Thanks for the quick replies guys there isn't any lights showing on the dash when the car is running, if it does turn out to be the timing chain is there a better quality part out there which i can buy then have someone/garage fit it cuz i don't want to keep changing it due to poorly made parts? Thanks again

Yeah i've been warned that it's an expensive and tricky job to do, thats why i wont be tackling it cuz i know very little about engines and will have to bite the bullet and pay a garage to do it

well get a fault code reader first before we jump to any conclusions. as I said buy a OBD2 scanner ELM327 (I think thats the model number anyway) 21 quid I paid a week ago. you will be looking to pay 20 quid for some one to plug it in for you.

Save buying a code reader, just tak the rocker cover off, locate the chain tensioner, (will be on the lefthand side of the engine as you look at it) and measure how far the tensioner piston is protruding. If approximatly 10mm, the chain is stretched beyond its tolerance. If this is the case id scrap the car ane get another one.

It'll cost you between 500 and 1000 depending on where you get it done.

Darren, buying an ELM scanner cable wont tell him if the chain is stretched, and as theres no MIL on, theres obviously no pending fault codes :)

just because there is no MIL light on does not mean there is no fault. the MIL light comes on when there are major faults. it does sound like a timing chain but lets not jump to conclusions it could be something simple. as he said he knows very little about engines and will not be doing it himself

Thanks for the info guys, i understand it's difficult to diagnose something when you haven't seen the car and are only going off vague descriptions on the problem i'm experiencing i'll order one of those fault finders as darren recommended and i'll get someone who knows about cars to check the measurement of the piston tensioner as liam also kindly suggested, i thought it might of been damp because it looks like the engine has been steam cleaned but i've emptied a can of WD40 on all the connectors i can see, but that didn't work.

try pulling the battery off and leave it off over night and plug it back in when you get up :-) this should clear the codes but if there is a fault it will be the same.

Darren

Deffo sounds like chain mate.

Don't worry about what'll happen if you replace the chain, the part numbers for the replacement are different from the originals...but Nissan still won't acknowledge that a chain failing on a less than 100k/50k car is down to a weak chain. Micra's are bad for it too.

Parts will be cheaper from e-bay. There's a full chain, sprocket, tensioner and guide set for around £140 iirc wheras nissan will look for £400+. Its then a full day job so depending on labour you're lookin at £300+ unless you have friends in the trade.
