no start

I have 1996 n15. runs ace. This morn turned key, itmoaned a bit then started. Switched off and turned key again - just a click, no go. Attached fully charged battery and tried again, Again a click and no go. Connected 4 amp charger and ammeter showed 2 amp rate. With charger still connected I observed ammeter whilst assistant turned ignnition key - expected thermal cut out. Instead ammeter just moved up to 3 amps indicating a very small pull on the battery. I am puzzled. Any ideas please?

Right....turn your headlights on, then wiggle the positive terminal lead, on the battery, around where the connector is...you should hear a beep from the alarm and the lights should come on!! then try starting it, see how that helps an let me know bud!

Thanks for rapid response Daniel but it leaves me a little nonplussed. Is there some mysterious magic contained in your proposal which my seriously depleted cerebral resources cannot grasp. The first thing I checked was the integrity of the battery contacts and ensured they were ok. I haven't checked the connections at the starter end - I don't even know where the starter is located - do they still employ solenoids?

Sorry for my omission, overeagerness I suppose - didn't read the rules etc. Wil try to do better. l'm having a job figuring out all the buttons to press.

Welcome to the AOC! :)

Have you got a GTi  if so, the starter motor is a right PITA to get at, if it`s not a GTi, it`ll be alot easier to do. :)

His profile says Si. Clutch dust build up on the starter motor seems to be a common issue with the N15 so that could be a cause.

Oh, and hello!

Welcome to the club :-)
try and push start the car if its starts you got your problem :-) might as well get a volt meter to check if the alternaters packed up as well

*Alternator Daz mate.

Just a quick thing to try mate, smack the starter motor body really hard with a ratchet extension bar and try it again.. If you haven't drained your battery, it will most likely work.
Its only a quick fix though..

If yours is a 1.4 SI like mentioned.. The starter motor is towards the rear on the top of the gearbox, really easy to remove and clean up, as clutch dust stopped my starter working on my 1.6, and it was sound after a bit of WD40 and a rub down.
