hey guys, cant seem to get into the right section for this post so i hope this gets read,

Ive got a p1 gti which im doing up after my p2 getting wrecked by an imcompetent mechanic.. i picked the p1 up cheap and have put all my parts off the p2 on the p1.

Basicly the trouble started when i let a friend have a drive of it after thinking he was genuinly interested in buying an almera gti, first thing he did was a big dirty burn out which severly P***ED me off, afterwords there was a loud ticking noise coming from the engine.

It happens all the time now, when im cruising at any speeds, when i just press the accelerator slightly to gain revs it ticks like a grandfather clock on speed and if it gets put upto a challange of racing something worth racing, on rare occasions it does an even louder slower ticking aswell.

now the obvious thing to spring to mind was tappets and for an engine clocking up to 110k im a bit stuck which way to head.

I am wanting to get more power out of it, its got a hotshots manifold, full scorpian exhaust + decat and a Pipercross induction kit yet this is obviously just a starting point..

Is it worth getting the engine fully rebuilt, just get tappets replaced or try and get another sr20de or sr20det.. my old p2's DE is knackered.

Has anyone had this problem before or can anyone advise me?

Cheers

usually when the tappets go on the Gti's it means new engine, sorry bud

----

Iv re-set and replaced tappets on hundreds of cars but are 90% sure it means new block on these....

Sorry to hear about that mate, but have you thought about doing a VE conversion for a little extra oomph? Failing that, I don't think SR20DE's are that hard to come by, I remember a member on here did a straight engine swap in a day after theirs blew up.

What are you on about,if it needed a set of tappets you just replace them, you don't need a new engine thats just plain rediculous!

its a confusing situation.. really dont know what do do, as i said the engine is clocking up to 110k and previous owners didnt take care of her but that cant be helped now, im going for more power in the future so maybe a new engine would do the trick.

As for the VE engine, i heard that they are as rare as a rocking horses fudge dragon to find and really complicated to set up, ''one guy has had his VE for a year and a bit and still hasnt managed to get it running correctly'' is one comment i remember hearing off a friend. id love a DET but once again, its not a simple swap.. its times like these where i wish i had a nova, 1.1 to 2.0 in 3 easy steps! if only it was that simple for us almera owners.

sounds like youve ovaled your crank. and the bearing shells turn onto each other. the noise is the conrod going round the crank and hitting it. had exactly the same problem. changed the crank and its perfect. although you can get them reground and bigger bearing shells put in. check it by taking the 2 sumps off and the bottom of the conrods off. should soon be able to tell. quite a bit of work just to check. 2 hours. and to change the crank took me and a mate 2 days with no compressor because everything has to come off ie gearbox, all engine supports etc etc.

cheers for that andrewB, give me a bit more confidence that the engine isnt totally lost! il get it booked into a garage for a check after the new year, it doesnt make the sound all the time, ie when at any constant rpm

I think it depends, darchitect went from a GA14DE to a SR20VE and his isn't 100% as far as I know/have read, but Paul_D_GTi swapped his DE for a VE and all the necessary parts (You can get them from Finland) fairly easily.

Good luck with getting her back on track anyway mate. Is what remains of your phase 2 still around?

update.. last night the ticking got really bad and hasnt stopped, i think im going to take her off the road until its fixed.. the tapping is very voilent on the top end of the engine.

exactly what happened to mine! to be honest mate your better off putting a new engine in it. its going to cost you a fortune if you cant do it yourself im afraid. only reason i changed the crank was because i could do it myself, and it was cheaper then putting a new engine in it and only needs to last until february before i swap the engine. wouldnt bother changing the oil either as it will be a waste of money. changed the oil on mine and put some slick 50 in it when it started tapping. didnt make the slightest bit of difference.

How loud is the tapping? just out of curiosity really cos mine is quite tappy, i can just say hear it at idle from inside with the windows up and it just had an oil change. I'd just be interested to know if mine is on its last legs!!

starts off with just being able to hear it inside. first heard it and took it to a mechanic mate. he said it was tappets. gradually noise got worse. told me to slick 50 it as it might help then it eventually got really loud and started to investigate and found it was my crank. yours might just be tappets but dumpstar85 sounds like he had my problem.

Thanks for that. It probably is just tappets. I always wondered if it was just mine or if anybody elses did it. I seem to rememer a thread about engine noise a while back and a few people suggested it could be injector tick as apparently they are quite noisy - bloody noisy if thats what it is!!

mines always tapped it sounds like it coming through the air vents i cant hear it when im sitting and its just idle'in, but when i start driving it starts tick tick tick tick tick tick tick as soon as i put the clutch in it goes away, clutch back out tik tick tick tick tick , got a new clutch and its still ticky! so dont think it was that!

funny noise through air vents????

Stick that in search might give you a different idea!
