non starter?

hi guys - got myself a bog standard 'S' a month ago. Over the weekend there the car was having a bit of difficulty starting.

At times when I turned the key there was absoloutely no noise from the car at all - other times it would just sound like it wanted to start but wouldn't actually start!!!

After a random number of attempts at starting the car (it happened all day thursday through to monday morning!!) between 3 and 12 attempts, the car would finally start and there wasn't a problem out of it...until I turned the engine off and started it again.

Has anybody got a clue what could be wrong with it? I thought it might have been due to the cold whether in Belfast here - but I doubt it. I read on a couple of sites it might have been a problem with the key (I ruled this out), and with not burning the fuel by taking short journies (ruled this out as my minimum trip was 15 miles every time!).

What about the battery?

Checked the battery - but the radio, lights etc would all work with the key turned just before the engine starts.

radio, light, etc don't need as much power from battery as engine start does!

Charge the battery - if that does not help, take the starter motor out and give it a good clean (clutch dust can be inside). Usually helps.

BTW. use a "Search" button - it's been discussed many times, even in non-paid users sections.
