Noob phase 2 N15 GTi owner!!!!!!

Well, I'm happy to say I am the proud new owner of my first Almera GTi.

It needs a bit of work, but planned a full service this weekend (just contacted Nissan and £79 inc VAT for air filter, oil filter, spark plugs, coolant, oil, fuel filter and new sump plug screw! Wow so cheap!)

It's a nice met blue colour (will post some pics after its serviced and cleaned on the weekend if its not 0 degrees!)

Just wondering, is there are problems or issues I should look at before I swap over to this as my daily drive? Going to miss using my Supra as a daily but 17mpg is just no good at all

Also - as you can't get a haynes manual to cover the GTi - is there a free download? Sorry its a new forum to me so maybe this has been asked before.

Lastly, apologies to JimGTI a club member selling his car that I was so close to buying, but when my Almera came up for sale just up the road from me, I couldn't refuse! No hard feelings I hope! Sorry!

Cheers
Russ

Hello and welcome!

Straight to the point, the main thing to keep an eye out for is rust! Check all the arches as well as near the rear suspension mounts (lift up the carpets in the boot to the sides to check). Apart from that they're pretty damn solid except some niggles.

Haynes manual wise, you need to use a combination of 2, one for the Almera (1.4, 1.6) and one for the Primera (make sure you get one that covers the 2.0 models!).

Thanks for the heads up - unfortunately there is a little rust on the rear arches. Can see it bubbling. Whats the best cure for this? What do you guys use?

I will have to check the suspension mounts on the weekend.

Thanks mate, I will join actually. Just need to wait for pay day (or someone to buy my Supra as gota get rid of it now)

Seems like there is access to a workshop manual online somehow? Is that by becoming a paid member?

Cheers everyone.

basically all the info of a workshop manual is on this site and a few sister sites, joined up an have a nose round, theres a good knowledgeable bunch on here ;)

Welcome Russ - used to have a N/A Supra myself, so I know the pain of letting it go ! But I think the little Gti will surprise you, it's a purer drive with more feedback. :)

Hello there,

Nice idea to give a new car a nice service, cause you can never really tell whats been done at each service!

The parts price seems really good, but i might give the nissan oil a miss as its only old mineral poop!

I'm sure you'll enjoy your gti!!!

Matt

Thanks for the warm welcome!

Yes, I will be sad when the Supra goes but I'm liking my 15er a lot already.

Thanks for the heads up on Nissan oil - thought they would put semi in there?

My 15er has done 120k miles. What would you suggest is best oil to go for? Is it best to go for something like Castrol GTX for high mileage? Don't want it to burn any oil so was under the impression to go for a slightly thicker oil?

Anyone fancy a Supra Turbo? lol

Hello and welcome to da club, there's a few Supra's where I live around and they have quite a presence, as big cars do. Someone has a menacing black one I'd look tiny sitting in it. I think you'd fine the GTi quite economical on petrol and parts. Its only once you go down the modding route you'll quickly fine most things have to be custom made.

Regards,
Leigh

Thanks Leigh, feels like I'm driving a mini after coming from a supra (but a very quick mini!)

Don't think I will go overboard with modding though. Maybe just induction and rust proofing! Its got £600 of alloys on it and lowered so looks fairly tidy.

I'm not too far from you - I live near Epsom so you may have seen my mkiii supra around... there ain't many of em.

I do see I nice red GTi near Cobham/Weybridge every day. Anyone on here?

Cheers

Castrol gtx 15w30 is what i use in my N16, i'm not sure what is recommended for the gti however!

It maybe worth asking at the parts desk if they have a alternative make of oil

At this time of year I'd be more tempted to put 10w30 in for the Gti. With colder morning starts, it would give your engine more protection. With newer engines (N16) I'd go for a 5w30 over winter & change it in late spring.
