oil every where! please help!

Hello everyone,
i really hope you lot can shed some light on my new car, it's a 1.8 sport plus on the x plate.

I brought the car with being told it had a oil stem seal problem, i first job was to replace those, job went well apart from afterwards the car smoked all the time instead of only on start up!
So i decided a new engine would solve all! so i found a 23k engine, only thing was it had a different intake (cruise control i think) so i swapped the old intake onto the new engine, unfortunatly i also changed the rocker covers before knowing that my problem from the start was a missing crank case breather gasket on the rocker cover which aloud oil into the intake.
so now fitted the missing said gasket the car was still smoking, i put this down to oil in the exhaust so changed the first cat and took her for a long run to try and burn off the oil, after driving 70 miles i pulled over for a check up to find that i had lost well over a litre of oil! it was still coming trough the breathers on the rocker cover.
any ideas please!! i feel i've been over everything but i must be missing something, it can't be the rings or oil stem seals on 2 engines, so it is something to do with either the intake or sensor/ecu surely??????????

many thanks in advance Barry

Maybe go back to your first setup in which you replaced the valve stem seals, as you know that engine was running ok, and only burning a bit of oil. Make sure you swap the crankcase breather gasket onto the engine you're putting in the car.

A litre of oil is a silly amount to have lost on such a short journey.

Can I ask how you measured that you lost a litre? Did it take a litre of oil to top it up to a safe level? Or did the dipstick read low?

Also double, even triple check for leaks. I've known people leave silly things loose after the amount of things you have off to do an engine swap

Thanks joe,
unfortunatly both engines are doing the same pointing me to the intake as i have checked over everything else, (i'm starting to loss my hair over this! lol)
the litre of oil is just that i fill up to just below the max before leaving and after cooling down it was well under the minimum, my guess a litre plus had gone, the breather pipes were dripping with the stuff.

is there surrposed to be such a vacume on the breather pipe with the one way vavle on it? seems a very strong sucktion, tryed blocking this pipe off to solve the problem and this just lead to the first breather throwing oil in? i've never come across such a weird problem?

also if anyone knows where i can get a new fuel pump please let me know as mines making a very weird humming noise. (i'm starting to think i've brought a lemon of a car, tho she drives lovely as long as you keep the oil topped up and down look behind at the smoke your leaving.)

many thanks barry

Well from the minimum to the maximum on the dipstick is only something like 0.2l if I remember correctly, consult your user manual.
All manufacturers use similar guidelines.

So basically oil is escaping out of breathers?

Joe

Check all your breather pipes are clear,

i blocked one of mine up without realising what i was doing, this basically blocks the crankcase ventilation system, the pressure builds up in the crankcase and i guess the pressure has to get out somewhere, the oil on my car took the route of submerging my spark plugs, maybe its being forced past your piston rings in your case?

Thanks guys!
i knew i could count on you lot after reading around the forum and seeing how helpfull you've been in the past, i'll give it another look and drive later and relay my results back.

its 1 litre between min and max on the dipstick

It's still smoking and using oil! i've checked all hoses are fitted and clear.

seems even more strange that the car drives so well no problems with power or anything, but the oil keeps disapearing and re-apearing as smoke out the exhaust! is there any tests that i could do for say piston rings? or oil stem seals? i have a head gasket test kit and it comes out all clear, have checked compressions and their all fine.

is there any other breather tubes/hoses i'm missing or may have the wrong way round other than the 2 coming from the rocker cover?

please help i've lost so much hair over this that i'm starting to look like homer simpson, and i'm getting his temper too! keep all hammers out of my reach, lol.

correct me if im wrong people but isnt there a one way valve on teh PCV system, if this doesnt open it would be like blocking a vent pipe yes?

daleeeeeeeee :P

PCV system ah? sounds like that could be my problem just been looking it up around the net but am finding it hard to find out what i'm to do to fix it? just replace the valve or is there more to it?

many thanks barry

I'm no expert on the pcv valve but I do remember someone burning a bit of oil because theirs was broken and not venting properley, which was causing the pressure to build up and force the oil to places it shouldn't go, ie past the piston rings.

I can't remember who it was, but I've got a feeling it might have been oxidegti?
Maybe?
I think a new one was roughly £20ish from nissan.
Joe

Yeah, try a new PCV (positve crankcase ventilation) Valve.

The PCV valve is located on the Valve cover, if its the same as the GA series engine, it will be located above the oil filler cap.

Remove the hose from the valve cover and you should see the barbed fitting, this is the PCV valve. Pull it out and check for blockages.

Its basically a ball and spring type valve that allows crankcase gases to be drawn out, and into the intake to be burnt.

It will probably look like this http://www.automotivemazparts.com/includes/images/Mazda_Parts/Maz_PCVvalve.jpg

thanks everyone, i've got one on order.
i had already looked at this before but guessed it worked ok as when blowing and sucking on the tube it did open and shut, but i think the said spring is brocken as it seems very loose inside. anyhow one is on order and we'll find out tomorrow.

my fingers are crossed so hard i'm loosing blood circulation to the tips.

This is becoming a thorn in my side!
I'm thinking about this problem all day and all night, please people help me!
i fitted the pcv valve yesterday and it seemed to thin the smoke out, so i took her for a long drive to try to clear the oil already in the manifold but it would seem she's still drinking the oil from the sump! i went over all the pipes and sensors on my return home and can't find anything wrong, tho i made a mistake and put the air compressor to the gearbox breather and seem to have thrown the oil out of that as well now but thats a whole new problem that should be an easy fix.
Do you think a new manifold would be a good next step? prehaps mine has a internal blockage? is so do you know wheres best to get one from or anyone that may have one?

many thanks barry
