Petrol Consumption

Hi guys,

Just bought a 1999 Almera and was wondering if the engine uses petrol on the "over run".

Basically, does the engine use fuel when engine breaking or not? I know newer cars are designed that they do not, but just not sure about older cars.

Its a 1.4 petrol . . . . . .

Any help would be great.

Cheers

Dave

I`d say yes, a small amount, otherwise surely it would stall. To gain the best MPG braking should be kept to a minimum, as you`re wasting the cars momentum/kenetic energy.

I've plugged it into the laptop and I can say yes it does use some, but it wouldn't stall as the momentum of the car is pulling the engine round, when you disengage the clutch it would start fuelling again, so it wouldn't stall. But yeah, the Almera does use a small amount of fuel on the overrun. However, it is more economical to use engine braking than to disengage the clutch and roll, as idling uses more fuel than the overrun.
