Phase 2 speedo unit in Phase 1???

Has anyone tried to fit a phase 2 combi meter off a GTi into a phase 1 mera Gti? I know that they go up in smoke if you just plug them in but im thinking of chopping the end of the harness still plugged in so i've got the correct wiring and changing all the wiring the right way round on my mera's harness so its the same Anyone tried it or think it will work????

hard to say mate, i know i couldnt get a feed for my tacho from the back of my phase 1 clocks but Si could on his phase 2's so there maybe a difference ?

i did make a hybrid set up once using the white faces from the phase 2 cluster & re-fitting them to a phase 1 set but wasnt happy with the end result as you have to slightly modify the white faces as they screw into the cluster in different places & the needles where slightly different too

just with the cars not having very many changes altogether i thought the harnesses would be the same but wires in different places
