Please help!!

I have had my Almera GTI for 48 hours and already having a problem!!

Ok. When I bought her she had a full Powerflow system, special maifold and Apexi cone filter (proper one from Japna, not a fake one......lol)

Now I like standard cars so put the original airbox on with a new filter and changed the spark plugs, im now using Bosh Super 4's....... (still got Powerflow exhaust and manifold, just not the Apexi funnel air filter)
I have cleaned out the throttle bodie and all breathers.

Now earlier she felt a bit hesitant on pick up and jerky around town in 1st and 2nd gear at low speeds. I have just come back from a 15 mile drive and gave her some beans..........past 4,000rpm the exhaust spits and makes a misfire kind of noise and now is not going over 4,000rpm.......even when at at standstill in neutral I revved her up, got to 4k and again started making this horrible noise from the exhaust, almost like an HT lead is loose, but there not? Any ideas...... Could she have been set up to run with the Apexi filter as there is fresh-ish looking tip-ex marks on the dizzy, or dont these cars get on with Bosch Super 4 plugs or could it be something different?

Any help would be great!!

this happened to me, turns out the bosch super 4's had decided to disconnect the ceramic core from the steel threaded sleeve and was venting exhaust gases out the spark plug hole.

pull em out and check them. for signs of burning on the top half

and in future buy NGK plugs...

make sure they are gapped correctly as well, last couple of sets of plugs I used was not the same gap as what come out of the car, they made it run a bit lumpy.

NGK BKR6EY-11

if you get the ones with -11 on the end, you don't have to set the gap for the mera.

And yes, its been figured out through the years that NGK are the best for the SR20, they are standard too.

I had NGK iridium plugs - run perfect and still does.

And you don't have to worry about changing plugs for next 60000 miles.

oh, you said you put the standard airbox on - have you plugged MAF back in?

after getting ym car i did a full service on it and at the time used bosh super 4's within a week i was on nkg plugs.

as the guys above have said get the bosh out and get the nkg plugs in

Thanks guys :)

First thing I will do tomorrow (or today should I say, it 2am ) is get some NGK BKR6EY-11's. She had NGK BKR5EY-11's before, so only differance being the '5' in the code

Halfords is 2 mins away from me so hope they sell this plug.

That's just the temp rating, dont worry about that, you could get 5,6 or 7 really it wouldn't make much difference.

Not reving past 4k does sound like a MAF issue. Like said above make sure it`s plugged in....you could also carefully clean the element with carb cleaner spray.

i'd reccomend staying with standard reccommendaion BKR5's as i noticed 6's take longer to get going in the morning, similar to myself.

Off the top of my head I would say you have cleaned out the Air Flow Meter and damaged it in the process, or damaged it when removing. They should not really be cleaned, unless ultra carefully. They are one of the most delicate parts of the engine management.

Like rowdy said, past 4k the MAF is stuggling to measure the air mass passing through it and the engine management is shitting itself. Popping through the exhaust etc it probably unburnt fuel.... also probably killing your cat as we speak.

Try get it changed for a known working item.

On another note, ive used super 4's before in an SR20.... the car came with them.... she ran beautifully. Strange.

If you just clean the wire filament in the spray of the aerosol it is safe. But agreed they are delicate.

Ok..... Changed the plugs back to original's, well the NGK's that were in the originally......... runs fine now :)

I went to Halfords to buy some new NGK's......well Halfords were about as much good as mud flaps on a tortoise, no NGK plugs for my car :(

Thanks again guys.....really helpful advice ;)
