Please help

Today morning i changed the disc and pads all around but i have few problem.

Brake pedal feels spongy. Pedal needs to travel a lot more then before for braking.is this because it needs to bed in or do i need to bleed the brakes.

Rear disc are really hot after a small journey. Is it because the calipers are sticking or just a case of waiting till it beds in.
Sorry for the newbie questions,

Hi & Welcome

I've not been here that long myself but to me it sounds like you need the brake's bleeding and sounds like the calipers on your rear disc's are either to tight and constantly touching or maybe sticking in the brake's applied position. I had a problem that my wheels were making a high pitched noise and the disc were excessively hot, i took the car back to the garage I brought it and it turned out to be the calipers sticking. They cleaned the caliper's and copper greased them, fitted new pads free of charge and all was good. Not had any issue's since and I've had the car nearly a year, done 8k miles :)

Sticky calipers are a common problem. Push them back and if that doesn't fix it disassemble and refurb.

Spongyness is most likely air in the brake system. Bleed and topup.

Did you change them yourself?

Rears need to be wound in on an n15 ( not sure whether n16 are different/ what car you have). You may be able to do this with some molegrips or you may need a rewind tool. You can get refurb kits from "bigred" off of ebay, or it may just be easier to get a replacement depending on how knackered yours is

Use an angle grinder spanner to wind them all the way out. Lift up the dust boot and smear a little copper grease, then wind all the way back in.

Thanks for the help, i did what liam said on the rear offside but its still getting hot, and the other side is even worse.

The old brake pads and disc were fine,no sticking or anything, have i done something wrong.
Or do the caliper needs cleaning from dirt because i didnt do that or greased them up.

My old N16 was a bugger for the handbrake mechanism on the rear brakes seizing up.i'd have a look at that. Was lucas rears on mine which explains everything.

When you pressed the pistons back in to fit the new pads did you remove the top of the reservoir? To allow the fluid to rise.

Did you also clean the oil off the discs that they are coated in to prevent them rusting whilst they are stored?

If you havnt you will have contaminated the pads and I would suggest changing them again.

Yes i took the top off, also cleaned the disc before putting them on, could the air in the brake lines can cause this?
Also handbrake seems worse then before.it has to travel alot more then before after changing the brakes.

Unless any lines were opened no air will enter the system.

You need to operate the handbrake about 50 times to set it. Then pump the foot brake....all will be fine then.

Thanks for all your help,am going to take the car to the garage tommorow and let you know whats the problem.
Just hoping its something simple and cheap job.

Did you line the notch in inner rear pad with the recess in caliper piston?
Got it back from the garage and thank god it wasnt a sticky caliper. But as rowdy-gti said the notch was not lined up properly and that was causing problem. Bled the brake lines and its all good. Thank alot for everyones help.
