problem with headlight flasher

hi all , i have a 2.2 diesel almera and the problem is that the flasher only works when the lights are switched on to either sidelight or headlight ,but does not flash as it would do normally ie with the lights off also.any help would be much appreciated.

no i mean the headlight main beam ,like when u flash to give way.sorry for not being specific.

what year is it? and is the car a damage repair ?

its a 53 plate, just bought it a few weeks ago from trader in p/x but dont know if its a d/repair.

have a look behind the head light to see if it has been cut and joined. if the wires are fine start to check the fues's there is 1 next to the battery and there is one in the small compartment next to the steering wheel closest to the door.

i had a look yesterday and there are no wires cut and also the fuses are fine.just dont understand why it only works with the lights on ! weird.

have a look by the steering Column and take the screws out and see if any of the wires have been modified. I have modified mine so when the ignition is off the lights are always off even if the light switch is on. as long as the ignition is on the lights can turn on otherwise they are off.
