Hi your not the only one looking for one! ive been looking for a few weeks or so. i think the main thing to look out for is rust on the front crossmember below the radiator as this is a prone area on them. Im sure there are some other things to look out for that other members may be able to enlighten you on. As far as i know there was a re-call on some of the headlamps but dont know the ins and outs of it.

They are a top car for the money, thats why im after one, i dont think you can get much else for the money with the same spec. The 2.2dci's arent no slouch either!

Things to look for:- regular services, because of the supposedly bad turbos. Smoke from exhaust, it's got a average fuel consumption display of the last ten resets so it's worth looking how it's been driven. Check the oil for water and vice versus, rear calipers sticking or seized one of mine is haven't got round to it yet! Check it's had all the recalls from Nissan. And get a spare key will cost you a fortune otherwise. Hope this helps.

There's a black 04' sxe on the net up for £4200 with full service, plus it's been advertised since I bought mine so 5-6 months so some good haggling £3500.... Check for any loss of power at over 3000rpm and any squeeks an squeels under the bonnet regarding the timing chain.

Theoretically the timing chain does not ever need to be replaced. If regular oil changes are performed then there should be no need.

ok. but obviously a small amount will need it it changed for one reason or another. is there anything i would be able to spot that would tell me the cars timing chain would be on its way out. lovin' what you've done to that almera of yours edk!!

Thanks jonny :)

iirc you can listen out for a rattling of the chain on start-up and engine cut off. You also might find it doesnt run smoothly and/or has trouble starting. Hopefully someone else will be able to confirm this as I'm not 100% sure about that :O

Headlights were recalled because the original bulb housings were melting.
Boost sensor was replaced along with ECU/mapping due to over-boost issues leading to potential early turbo failure.

Check with your local Nissan dealer and they'll check if the recall work has been carried out on your car or not. When mine was done I got it all done for free with a courtesy car included. Took a day.

is there any time limit to get recall work done or is it indefinite? would it be worth maybe giving the reg a car i'm looking to buy to a nissan dealer to check for recall work then before buying?

Doesnt seem to be such a problem on the phase 2 (generally they seem better treated) but could simply be that it's because it's a newer car.
