Quick wing mirror question

Hi I was recently away in kent and went out one morning to find the near side wing mirror was missing its glass. Dunno if it has been taken out or hit but the mirror was nowhere to be found - lucky me!

I was gonna go to halfords and just grab the replacement mirror glass but looking at the driver side one it looks like the glass fits into something first and then that clips into the actually wing mirror unit. does anyone know if this is correct or is it likely that the mirror just sticks in?

Sorry for the very noobish question, ive searched and found a few things but still a little unsure. Any help is much appreciated (especially if its before the grand prix starts!!)

(it's on a p1 gti if that makes any difference)

Cheers, Matt

I think theres a black plastic "frame" that the glass is in, that then clips into the actually unit... I think a scrappers/breakers would be your best bet mate :)

Hey thanks for your mega fast response, I was hoping it would'nt be that but at least I know now. i'll have a ring around and see what I can find!

Thanks again dude I appreciate that!

No worries buddy, you might be able to get one pretty cheap from a breakers or something, I know I got a full wing mirror for my colleague for about £15! then again, don't think hers was electric

Hope it goes well for ya!

Also on a similar note, I drove off yesterdayy, came to a dual carraigeway, and realised my passenger side wing mirror was bent backwards!! (not the way its supposed to be folded!) So think someone musta kicked that overnight (Saturday morning so friday night drunks... )

pssssh, what a lovely world.

Thanks yeh I might have to go with a breakers unless nissan sell it seperately. Doubtful coz the only quote I've had from breakers so far is for the full mirror wanting £30! Will wait till monday though, normally get a text for a dirt cheap breakers part in the end.

Yeh it's something quite special when mankind has such respect for each others possessions - really warms the heart!!

halfords ones are double sided tape, have fitted one or two on different cars when the entire mirror has been missing but no idea if it would work on an almera, i would be tempted to use some no more nails or similar aswell as the tape is meant to stick to a broken mirror, yours is likely to have a much smaller area now.

only £6.99 iirc so not overly expensive, worth a try if you dont get a decent quote from a breakers

the mirror replacements you buy in places like halfords do indeed sit on a backing plate. If someones taken your backing plate which it sounds like they have you need another one :)

I know you probably knew that already.. but nissan/scrappers/ebay etc is best bet.

Try "nissanautoparts" on ebay they are breaking 2 GTI's at the moment. I got a mint rear bumper with splitter for £25 from him (Ben) so should be pretty cheap if you need to buy a whole mirror.

Thanks for all your input I really appreciate it, i've been finding it tricky for somewhere to just sell that black backing plate which I am not really suprised at but I will try nissanautoparts (thanks for that).

This might sound like a stupid question but is it likely that the backing plate that the mirror sits on would be identical on the electric and non electric mirrors for the Almera N15. I'd obviously get a better deal for a non electric version if I do have to buy a full wing mirror but I have know idea if there would be a difference or not.

Thanks again you guys - I hate being poor!!

its white :P

Hi just a quick thanks again to everyone that helped I got it done/bodged similar to the advice from 'sprint' by making a wide flat surface bracket to fit the mirror glass to and ended up getting a cheap front indicator unit from 'nissanautoparts' (thanks '98GTI') in the process to try out one of those suteki jobby's. I'm sure i'm in for a world of pain and frustration but i'm bored so sod it!

Thanks!
