rare issue relating to gearbox

Hello everyone.
I own an automatic 2003 Almera SXC
For the last month it's been acting up strangely, while cruising it suddenly loses power (RPM goes up but it slows down, much like what happens if you accidentally shift from D to N to R and the engine shuts down). I find the only way to get the car moving again is to stop, turn it off and back on again.
So my thoughts on it, and later my mechanic's as well, is that it sound more like something electronic than mechanical.
On a first scan nothing showed.
A more specialized scan showed a sensor as the culprit.
I'm in Latin America (Costa Rica), and for now I have no part number, but in Spanish my mechanic called it: Sensor de Movimiento de la Caja de Cambios (Motion Sensor for the Gearbox).
This is probably NOT the right name in English.
When he asked the local official Nissan dealer, he was told they don't carry it, and to order it, the part by itself will be $500!!!
Plus, labor.
So... I wanted to ask for help. First to get the right name for the part (so I can look it up on eBay and other sites), or maybe you guys can point me in the direction of an online dealer, maybe get a used part, after all, it's a sensor, so I know it's safer to go for used, unlike mechanical parts.
Anyway, thanks for the help, and pardon my absence of vehicle savvy and lousy English!

Welcome. Do you know where on the car it is? Is it on the gearbox or somewhere else?

Thanks for the reply.
The name seems to be: "Revolutions Sensor".
It's the dark cable/sensor on the top of this pic (attaches to the gearbox).
