Rattling noise

Banging noise

Hey guys :)

Was just wondering if anyone knows what the rattling noise could be on my car? Sounds like it's coming from under the front footwells, but couldn't say for definite. You can hear it when you first start the car for a few seconds, and if you're travelling slowly (i.e. in a traffic jam). It seems to go away when I put my foot on the brake, even if it's only a tiny bit.

Everything works fine, no impaired braking or car performance.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance :)

Rach.

It`s pretty normal for a GTi to have rattly suspension and calipers. Greasing up the front calipers guide pins helps a bit as it takes some of the `play` away.

Rattling on `start up` again is normal for a GTi, if it lasts only a few secs.

suspension shouldnt knock or rattle much at all though really. admittedly the brake pads may rattle if the pad carriers are worn of if perhaps thay are non genuine pads, but the suspension should not. might be the early signs of something. if it was mine id get it jacked up and have a look. check atnti-roll bar links, springs etc.

i agree with Ian about the brakes, but im reserving judgement about the suspension. it might indeed be nothing but it doesnt hurt to look.

Thanks stuart :) yeah need to get it on stands to sort the calipers anyway...need to get some new axle stands though, other ones arent much cop anymore! I think its just the brakes though...goes away at the lightest touch. Will check it out asap :) thanks again.

Thanks guys. Yeah could be any of those. I thought it was the exhaust at first but as it disappears when i touch the brake pedal i think it might be the brakes. Hopefully the weather will improve soon so i can check it out! Lol

it would come and go as the exhaust is giving off less or more back pressure. so in theory when you apply the brake the gasses aint flowing as much as if you were to put your foot down.

ok now not a rattling noise...but a knocking noise. Gets quite bad when I go over bumps and is really bad with people in the back. I think it's the top mount on the back left suspension...would this fit the bill? Is it doing any damage leaving it as it is at the minute? In the process of moving house, so can't really do anything for a month or so...

Seen a few threads about top mounts...think my suspension is standard, the front looks original, but haven't had a chance to get the car on stands and look at the back yet. Are the parts fairly cheap from Nissan or is it better to get 2nd hand?

Thanks :)

I had this and it was the shocker (two weeks old) that was bent  (when fittting the new ones the garange snapped the thread off a top mount and welded it back on). any way a new shocker (free replacement) and new top mount (£42 from nissan) fixed the problem.

Check the shocker to see if it is leaking or covered in black stuff as mine was compared to the other side which was ok.

Also it seemed ok when going on motorway but on slow corners, speed bumps it was terrible.

Thanks guys :)

Hopefully it wont be too costly to fix! Got to get it up on stands soon, it handles great and the back end returns fine when I push it down, so hopefully it's just the top mount!

Will post up what it was when I find out!

Thanks again.

Anyone know if these shocks are any good as a standard replacement? Haven't got the cash to fit coilovers or anything at the minute...just looking around incase it is the shock that's bent when I look what the banging noise is!

linky

Thanks :)
