Re Map????

I was wondering, how beneficial would a re map be to my pretty much standard PH1 GTi.

Has anyone had this done and is it recommended?

Cheers

Tom

i don't think anyone will have done this to a near standard gti cos whats the point. The std ecu is set up to run the std engine, ok maybe with age n stuff a remap could tweak or iron out a few things, but so could a service!

i'd say a remap is more to be looked at after breathing mods and the possible pulleys, cams etc etc have been added

If you have money buring a hole in your pocket, order yourself some cams

Last place to spent money usually

cos there's no point buying cams if breathing and possibly fuelling is std. if the engine can't breath any better cams will be held back big time, totally back to front way of doing it eddie, that;s precisely why people buy cams last

So ok then, benefits of cams/pullies and can anyone recomend some?

Its not that im lazy and dont want to reserch, if you guys have had experiences bad or good then id wanna know.

Cheers. :D

there are a few threads on this, including the what can you do sticky

but cams are a big improvement, not without the accompanying breathing and supporting mods though, it's like a chain only as good as it's weakest link

once you have exhausted all the bolt on modifications and still want more, get some cams the ecu will be fine to a certain extent, the standard ecu is very capable. but if you really feel the need for more a remap would definately help.

Get JWT S3Rs proven cams with gains or Tomei's

The just advance the timing and ECU reset

Sorted!

You need a decent induction kit, decent exhaust manifold/system

might help

A rolling road tune can be very beneficial, a good dyno tune checks compression, spark plugs, leads, emissions, MAF clean if needed and ignition timing. Plus advising you on any issues the motor might be having. Something that’s gradually getting worst over time might not be so easy to detect.

It’ll all help to bring your motor back to stock power and with good quality fuel, clean MAF and ignition advance circa 4 – 6whp can be had. If your planning any engine mods in the future a base figure is handy too.

good point dave,

the chap at power engineering did this, by setting up our timing etc, and telling us where it ran lean and what to do etc etc.

id recommend a remap, i did a remap on on my oriogonal gti engine, got 165bhp, with std cams, manifold/decat/cat back system and induction kit,

but i did have a ported and polished and skimmed head, on a fresh built engine,
:-)

have to disagree with most of you on here,

yeah, if the guy intends on doing modifications later on, a remap is a bit pointless.

but there are still gains to be had when just remapping a standard car. granted not as much, but dont forget, this is a factory car, built to a budget, meeting targets with emissions etc etc, and at the youngest is over 10 years old, so there are certainly gains to be had.

i know kerries needs one, even before the manifold and airfilter went on, it is running abit rich. granted it would be worth her waiting till cams are in though

this isn't a good this stu, datsun925 (sorry) and i both made 165+bhp with the same stage1 mods and no headwork or ecu remap eek

- Induction Kit
- Cold air feed as heat soak sucks
- 4 branch manifold + decat system
- Cams
- Remap

Jobs a good one.

edit: Uprate your suspension to match.

cold air feed as heat soak sucks?

cold air feed wont effect heat soak at all, yeah it make the heatsoaked air that bit cooler, but its not getting to the root of the problem. and even then, a cold air feed wont work until hi speed.

Get an enclosed one then, in carbon fibre.

So iv been looking at some tomie's and iv seen some Procams and Poncams, what the difference. Apart from the 200 quid difference!
