recomended bodyshops?

Im going to be smoothing my boot but i want the plate welded professionally as I think i'll mess it up but I want to do the rest myself.. Can anyone recomend a body shop that would just do the weld for me? Im happy to cut the peice myself and basically prep it all.

thanks.

theres no fun in that... I want to do as much myself as i can

plus i allready have a gti tailgate and spoiler... spare.

Buy Consett_GTi and sell your own, youd probably save money doing it that way insted of paying somebody to weld yours for you ;)

Welding a plate on is probably the easiest part of the job mate. The bit that will be easiest to fk up will be the Plate shape itself.

Flat plates aint gonna do as the boot door isnt a flat surface , its a very fine curve iirc

its not really about the money its more I want to have done the work myself, I like to be as involved in things as I can be, It shouldnt cost much to weld, it'll only be 10 mins of labour and if worst comes to it i'll do it myself.

A smoothed boot isnt easy at all, I have many friends in bodyshops, and they all hate doing them. It isnt a job you can do yourself, you need a pro to do it. IMO buying one already done is by far the easiest method!

Mind I would say one thing.... , if you do it urself , persist at it and eventually get it right , you can say "I done that" & possibly do it for other people on the side making a lil extra.

I dont see why it should be hard, the only thing Im not sure on is the welding, Either way i want to try it and if all goes wrong i'll buy a pre done one.

The problem a lot of people have had is cracking on smoothed boots.
Suppose if it's not done professionally then within a year it will be ruined.
I am positive that you would be taking it to a bodyshop if that happened.
Just a thought mate, like said. It's quite an art to get it right :)

well it seams even if you get it done professionally it cracks anyway.. I know a few people in the motor trade so i might see if i can get an inside opinion. thanks though.

If its done properly it will never crack, mine never has and its been done for years.
The welding is by far the easiest, if you can weld then theres no way you can possibly fuck it up, how could you? You simply weld a plate on, couple of good spot welds, the tailgate has a lip round thats perfect for the plate to weld to, but the plate needs to have a fine curve on it.
Theres a few on here Ive seen wheres they've just used a flat plate and it looks like they've been rear ended
the bodging is the hardest, got to get the mix right, patience, getting it smooth etc

This might be where my inexperience shows but I thought that you would be best to run a full weld all the way around the plate, I could do a few tacks easily but I didnt want to have to bridge a gap between two peices of metal with filler.

Surely that would crack very easily? And due to the size of the tailgate, a full weld is likely to warp/twist it which is why I'm not keen on doing it myself.

Thats why you should spot it, a full weld would probs warp the metal, Im not saying just a couple at the corners, just one every 2 or 3 inches will be fine, as for it not being strong enough, your whole car is held together with spot welds.

As long as its strong enough the plate wont flex same with the boot, and you need to get the plate a perfect fit then you wont need to use much filler, just a thin line.
