Repair or Sell?

Hello

I'm in a bit of a dilemna! Had my GTi MOT'd yesterday but it failed. It needs the sills welding, they are in quite a state apparently  The garage have quoted me £300 all in to do the welding but I've just spent £225 on a new cat, middle & rear sections of the exhaust to get it thorugh the MOT as i thought that would be all I needed as the powerflow system I have does not have a cat.

As the plan was to get the MOT, then put the car up for sale, I'm not sure if I want to spend the money on the welding or sell it as spares/repairs

What do you guys think? How much for the car as spares/repairs?
Its a Phase 2 GTi in black
Full factory phase 2 kit
134k miles
Almost full history
New s/s manifold & downpipe earlier this year
Powerflow middle & rear section exhaust
Tinted windows all round
Loads of new parts last year:
-Standard clutch
-Battery
-Starter motor
-Spax springs

Car is not mint, usual door marks from car parks, has slight dent in n/s front wing (no paint damage) & a few scuffs/scratches & small crack on front bumper

Help!
What shall I do??????

Haven't tried any other places yet mate, might have to though. They said they need to take all the carpets up inside the car in order to carry out the welding...
Just wondered how much the car would be worth without getting the welding done i suppose?!?

It would be worth bugger all without mot or tax. Got any pics of the rust? I had my sills done fairly cheap and they lasted well, the rest of the car didnt though.

Hmm, £80! I wish i got quoted that! I guess mine must be pretty bad :(
Last year mine didn't need any welding, dunno how its gotten so rotten! Might have something to do with living near the sea

Corbs - yeah didnt think it was gonna be worth much without MOT, especially at the moment. I think I'm gonna try & get some other quotes tomorrow as I have the day off work :)
Haven't got any pics of it, will try and get some tomorrow as well.

Cheers

shame you dont live near me

would have gladly welded them up for ya and save ya loads!

you will be charged up there for welding especially if they are bad.

if they are telling the truth and the carpets need lifting then it means that the under side sill is also perished . meaning that its not just a simple patch in unfortunately

if you get pictures that we can tell more.

unfortunately, the exhaust and the kit will most prob be the only money you would get back, so if your lucky getting your £400/£500.

high mileage engine, body work gone. then it a matter if people are willing to spend money close to xmas for other things as interiors etc.

even the PH2 bumpers dont seem to be selling well at the moment with everyone hard on cash.

not a good time!

i personally would look around at some back street garages etc look at some work they done, get some quotes. but if you get pictures up we can tell what we looking at

Welding Con

In your post you said that the garage said that the carpets would have to come up because the corrosion was that bad, how did they find this out? did they pull the carpets to look?

It seems that the tester has been a bit heavy handed with his screwdriver when poking about, if the corrosion is that bad why was'nt it picked up at the last MOT, i know Almera tin ain't that clever but to eat right thru to the inside in a year is a bit much.

A lot of garages are feeling the pinch you know.

I would run it up to Quickdraw and let him have a look, i get the feeling that you are being milked.

Cheers for your input guys :D

Unfortunately I can't really run the car anywhere far as the MOT has run out.

The garage who quoted the work are very busy all the time & never short of work so I dont think they are feeling the pinch too badly yet. I have used them a few times before, but as with most garages, I dont trust them 100%!

I definately need to get the work done as there isn't really much point selling it without an MOT as I won't get anywhere near what I want back for it by the looks of things :(

Best thing to, as said above, is to get another few opinions from other local garages just to make sure.

I don't understand how its got so bad in 12 months either but its not a good sign  I dont think they had the carpets back, they would have to do the work though, health & safety me thinks :thumb2:

u cant pull carpet sback on a mot test visual only.or with the appropriate little hammer. maybe it was on the way out last year but the previous tester was not as keen.just book it in for a test else were if you think its harsh and see if they fail it too?

All good now, wnet to another garage & got quoted £160 all in for the welding. Then I went back to the garage that quoted me £300 & they matched the price at £160 & did the MOT re test for free :D

Just goes to show that it is well worth shopping around for quotes!

Cheers guys
