Rev Counter doing funny things :P

when i start my car -the rev counter sits between 1100 rpm-1500rpm - but then suddenly drops to 600- arratically jumps back upto 1100 -then at one point down to 0 !!!! and does this for upto 30 seconds when its warm or cold - fluctuating between very random patterns !!!! -with the engine turned on no gas in neutral etc - but the engine note remains constant !?!

Anybody got any ideas please ? - the only mods ive done are a K&N 57i induction kit and stainlesss cat back exhaust .

do you have a a GA or an SR engine?

When I had the GA14DE engine, my rev counter started doing that after I fitted the K&N, try replacing the K&N with the standard airbox and see if that removes the problem.

Could also be the MAF, you could try cleaning it and see if that makes a difference.

nah i know what your talking bout dub but the engine note doesn't stay constant, and i've never seen it hit 0.

could be the actualy tacho is nackered, a few people on here have had that problem

Mine does that, but not when the engine is warming up, just random times. I'm not sure it's the tacho, I assumed that if it was then hitting it would make a difference. When I get my consult cable back up and running I'll see if it changes on screen to diagnose whether it's the sensor, cable or dials.

It's annoying though isn't it

yeah mine does the same when i start it up in the morning between 1100 and 1500 revs then down to 500 or 600

That's your engine warming up. If the actual revs of the engine change then that's normal, we're talking about the engine revs staying the same but the tacho playing silly buggers.

Mine started playing up similar to that about 3 years ago. It works from time to time but 99% of the time my revs are off the top of the rev range now, about where the 8500rpm mark would be if it was on there from memory. Think I remember reading in the past that a few other people had similar problems and it was down to a faulty rev counter, which after replacing fixed the problem. I have not bothered and have just left it as you can tell roughly what revs your doing from the engine sound anyway.

its a GA16DE mate yeh thanks mate - yeh i think i will do that - i take it cleaning out the MAF is fairly straightforward ?

Thanks for the advice all !:)

btw if the tacho is knakered is it really worth trying to find a new one ?lol - as soon as i start driving the rev counter is completly normal and the revs are at the correct speed in each gear etc -just on the first 30 seconds from turning the ignition on it does it

Its the wiring to the tacho thats fucked, probably a shit earth. Check the orange/blue wire at the back on the tacho. If you're having no luck, cut it off and run a new wire to the ECU (orange/blue)

...an its started playing up again lol - this time though the rev counter doesn't read anything above 4000 rpm in any gear (including in neutral) - engine and drive is spot on - i reved it in neutral and it hit the limiter briefly and rev counter read an amzingly low 3.75k -4k rpm and other times goes to 4000 rpm on counter jumps back to 3-3.5k -im guessing now its a wiring fault -an entirely the rev counter

very bizzare !!! -and obviously i can put up with as there is little tendancy to rev it past 4000 rpm in any gear lol !!! :D
