Revs Stuck.

I’ve not had the car for long however I was on the motorway last night and the car drives fine when moving up the rev range. However when I came to a stand still the revs were at about 1600rpm. (Obviously at a stand still they should drop back down to 900rpm).

Anyone have an idea what this could be?

I also sometimes get this when coming to a stand-still. My clutch is quite heavy at the mo and sometimes having trouble finding 1st gear, and it sometimes pops out of 1st too, think it's the clutch on the way out or the cable needs adjusting? Anyone else with any coments?

Normally I would associate revving problems with the clutch too. However, when the clutch is going it usually revs excessively when the cars movement isn’t being matched by the revs increase etc.

Mine doesn’t do that. It pulls fine; it doesn’t over rev when on the accelerator. The gears don’t ever pop out. Or anything of that sort.

It just doesn’t drop all the way down to 900rpm when on idle. Could this something to do with ‘idle valve’? (I have no idea what this actually is… other that the fact that it keeps the cars revs constant on idle… I think)

if you dont suspect the clutch, maybe the throttle cable is a bit tight or sticky. also try taking off your filter pipers to the throttle body and give in there a good clean

Finding 1st difficult is common on almeras. it does eventually slip in,

Regarding the revs - could be the throttle is sticking as previously said i.e the throttle isn't quite closing properly. I've heard there is some kind of damper that holds the revs up before it falls to normal idle speed around 800rpm or so but this only happens a second or 2.

As stated it should do this for a few secs anyway as a anti-stall feature.

Unplug the TPS and see what the idle runs at. If its still high ( or even low ) adjust to 850-900rpm using the screw adjuster on the inlet chamber.

If all is ok then..........

You should have slight play in the throttle cable.

Remove the large rubber inlet hose that attches to the throttle body and clean the carbon deposits out of the throttle body that may be stopping the butterfly fully shut.........

Nice clean looking engine bay... I will try to give that a go but to be fair it only does it occasionally aside from the high revs for a few seconds.

My Sri does this occasionally. I need to pull the throttle pedal upwards with my foot to get it to rest at normal idle.

Hi again guys. I kind of kerbed this as I thought the service would sort the problem out. It seemed to for a little while but unfortunately it’s back again.

I’m not very technical minded so don’t feel confident trying to tackle the problem on a trial and error basis. Would dearly love some help from those in the know….please?

There doesn’t seem to be a set pattern as to when this will happen. It initially happened when I was on the motorway and noticed it when I put the clutch pedal down to change gears. The revs wouldn’t come down when the clutch was depressed or when in neutral. However it does when in gear and the revs match the engine speed etc all as normal.

More recently it happened when I filled up from Tesco’s (doubt this is the problem, right?), again revs move up and down with engine speed etc but when the clutch in depressed and when the car is in neutral it just shoots up between 2-4000rpm. So assuming there is some problem with the cars idling? The rather annoying this is it doesn’t happen all the time and I can’t work out when it will or wont happen. I’d tried pushing the accelerator pedal up with my foot when it happens but this only lowers the revs ever so slightly. I do suspect a sticky throttle cable but what can I do to free this? WD40?

Has anyone else had this happened before?

Rowdy-GTi do you think it still could be something to do with carbon deposit in the throttle body?

Could be a dirty throttle body....have a look and see.

Check the base idle by unplugging the TPS ( throttle position sensor ) with the engine running ....when its at normal temp.
