hi everyone, thanks for the info on getting a clutch, i got mine from buypartsby.com for the total of £77.18 i think, i was told 2-3 days delivery, came next day, cant see how it could have been any better really!

but now....how the hell do i go about fitting a clutch to my gti...is it an engine out job?

or do i take the wheels, hubs, brakes and drive shafts out?

can someone help me out, find me a link on the web or email me a walkthrough, i dont fancy spending another 200 on getting a garage to fit it.

im quite handy with a spanner,(done an engine change) just never done a clutch before! and not really anything on a nissan...

thanks in advance

right il give you pratcical advice..if you dont ven know what to take out..go to a mechanic...rather than spending hours fcuking about and having to call a mechanic out to fix it

you will need to remove passengers side wheel. brake assembly, driveshaft, cross brace under engine, clutch cable on top of gear box, various hoses, earth point.

then unbolt the gearbox from the engine, remove from underneath the car

tbh it's quite a lot of work to do, i took mine off and put the gearbox back in the car, but got a mechanic to fit the clutch, just to make sure it was on right.

before you start ranting...i do have an idea what im doing, i asked if it was an engine out, or engine in, and a quick rundown, some cars its easier to take the engine out to do it, so i thought i would just ask to find out the easiest option...

and i will be doing this job with a mechanic actually... nothing youve said will help me change my clutch. thanks for the advice :)

and cheers to the other chap who posted, as i can now change my clutch knowing the easiest option...

from your original post you never mentioned a mechanic in fact why would you ask those questions if you had one to do the work? no offence intended just didnt want to see you with your car in pieces as happened my mate

no its fine mate, i probably should have stated, he does a lot of work, but as you know there is more than one way to do a clutch, so just thought i should ask which way would be the easiest...cheers for your help

its like mr smith says but im unsure as why you have to remove the brakes just remove the bottom ball joint or rather split it and pill the shocker and disk etc to let the drive shaft come out of the spline in the hub then remove the shaft from the box

also dont forget to surport the motor as it may come down a lot when you undu the gear box mounting not done one on my gti but have done lots and lots of clutches

as for the clutch halfrouds do cheep clutch tools you can buy one or use an exstension bar to line up the splines in the clutch and fly wheel as you bolt up the cover plate nothing to it its almost as easy as doing brakes that lots of ppl shy away from on here cause they are scared that they will fubar them but they are designed to be simple even if how they operate isnt
have you seen some of the ppl who get payed to fix our cars ie main agents lol
the hardest part will be removing the box on the floor get it as high as poss to give you lots of room

good luck m8 may be you should take pics and do a how to on it then maybe more ppl will give it a go

It's not actually that hard mate just a little time consuming...i've changed my clutch twice now with a mate. All in all taking it steady your looking at about 4 or 5 hours max.

You don't have to undo the brakes/calipers or anything like that as stated above.

Roughly off top of my head you have to take out battery, air box, all induction rubbers/MAF sensor etc etc to allow access to top of gearbox. Drain gearbox oil!!!

Remove passenger wheel, pop bottom ball joint and pop drive shaft out gearbox. Undo gear linkage and unplug or unbolt all earths/plugs/connectors interfering with box removal.

I'm not sure if there was one or two mountings to undo on gearbox aswell mate that need undoing obviously. Unbolt starter motor and unbolt all bolts around clutch housing (it takes a bit of wiggling to pop it off)

You'll need a mate with a rope or something round the box whilst you do this and get another jack under it too to take the weight (not actually that heavy though)

You deffo need a clutch alignment tool though when you install the new clutch that's a must but they aren't dear.

It's not really a difficult job as long as you know roughly what you're doing and you have a mate handy.
