Rubbing noise, but not rubbing?

Right!

I picked up my gti wheels off Rhyd today. They're lovely, as described. Standard size tyres etc.

Once I got back to london, gave them a quick clean, and pumped them up. Slapped them on the car and went for a drive. They're excellent, handle well, stable on the motorway etc. But alas, things are never that simple. When I take corners there's a rubbing noise, which can be faint or loud, depending on how sharp it is.

First of all, why the heck would it be rubbing when these are standard gti wheels?

Secondly, I turned the wheels to full lock, and stuck my hand behind the tyres and could get it all the way around, without feeling any contact between the tyre and the car. So could this be something else?

HELP

And for those of you unable to help, you can admire these lovely pics.

cant help but loving the pic, i can see why im a fanny though

You said it, not me!

Anyway, back to the subject at hand. I've tightened all the nuts as hard as I can, but do you reckon it could be anything to do with the nuts? I could try and tighten them even harder..

Actually, come to think of it, I may have bashed the left hand side wheels into a pavement today while trying to get past a retard straddling both lanes. Could that be it? I only noticed the noise after putting on the gti alloys though. Guess I could try sticking back on the old alloys and see what happens. Dammit, more effort.

I wouldn't say the wheel nuts should be the culprits if they're reasonably tight mate :)
Just try you're old wheels again I'd say. Loving the bridge picture, and must say, Rhyd's car looks sexy haha.

no refunds here, they where fine when they left my hands

Haha. Don't worry. I'm not going back to those shagged alloys EVER. Just going to swap them to figure out what the problem is, and then get the hacksaw out. And I bashed the pavement with my old alloys on, so I'm thinking I might have screwed a wheel bearing or something.

right i have confirmed there is no rubbing, as despite driving around lots of roundabouts with the noise there are no rubbing marks inside my filthy arches. The noise seems to be coming from the front left, which was the only tyre to be completely flat, so i'm guessing the rubber just needs time to get used to flexing again or something. Going to swap front and back tyres and will report back shortly. Posted from phone.

Will do with the tracking. Who's cheapest for that? I usually got to a specific branch of euromaster as they're friendly and do a good job.

Anyway, I swapped front and rear tyres, and the noise is almost completely gone. I only swapped one side at first, the one with the offending tyre, and noticed the noise had gone immediately. So have swapped both sets of tyres now (similar tread pattern). Should be alright. My hands are bloody aching though after using some pishy halfords shit scissor jack that I had to buy. HOORAY! The noisy tyre looks completely fine, and I'm guessing it'll shut up completely after its had some time to flex.

Just going to try and finish spraying the other side of the car now.

I'm using the standard nuts that came with the car. I'm assuming they're the same.. But like I said, the problem has been eliminated by shoving the noisy tire to the back. I think its something to do with the rubber on the tyre itself, as it only made the noise when it was put under strain when turning at the front. All's well that ends well.

Managed to finish spraying the car in the lovely weather we had today aswell. YAS!

the tyre might not be sat on the rim edge to good

or you just might be driving like a big girl - making the missus sick again

:P - she liked my driving better - liked being in the back of my car too if i recall ;)

YAWN!
