Show me your custom door builds

I realise that i've just started another thread in the same section, but i've got loads of ideas going through my head about how to install my new speakers up front. I'm not too fussed about the rears at this stage, so they'll be fitted in the standard locations.

I'm going to modify and standard A-Pillars to accept the bigger tweeters and this is fairly straight forward... BUT, it's the mids and the crossovers i'm thinking about and without my car in-front of me it's hard to actually plan this properly...

If the door cards are the same as the P11 Primera, i'll be able to remove the lower section which creates the door pocket. I can then make a build onto the outside of the pocket to accept the crossover and flush it in. Not too sure how to do the mids yet, because i want them to be seem - not hidden away behind the OEM grills, but at the same time still be able to bolt them to the door frame, not the door cards.

Have a look at this install over on NPOC, which should give you a better understanding of what i'm on about - http://www.npoc.co.uk/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=608

Just need some ideas/inspiration please! If anyone can point me to some photos of what others have done that'd be spot on.

Thanks. :)

it says access denied on that link mate.

It would if you haven't sorted your access over on NPOC. As you are a paid up member on AOC you can have complimentary access over on NPOC.

Send a PM to either Shade or ragt20 on NPOC and once they've verified your membership to AOC they'll give you full access. It's useful too as the both the Almera GTI and Primera GT share the SR20DE.

i made custom door pods 2 winter's ago,

just put a MDF ring on top of the ex speaker grille, then fibreglasses/ filler to smooth the ring into the shape of the existing door pod

my tweeters are installed behind the wingmirrors

Lovely work, Andrew. Good plan with the tweeters too, it'll definately cut down on my work load! Those door builds look great, exactly what i'm looking for.

Think this is pretty much sorted now, cheers.

Oh, and Ian... can't believe you even got rid of your electric windows - now that's determination for weight loss!

Quick update on this. I've changed my mind yet again, but now there is no turning back as i've drilled big 45mm holes in my door cards for the tweeters!

I've installed the crossovers inside the door pockets too - they show slightly but are mostly hidden. Tonight i'm going to try and do the wiring (in the freezing cold!) and possibly cut the MDF spacer rings for the mid-woofers.

One problem i did come across yesterday though, is that the 6.5" SPX-17REF speakers not only mount deeper, but the frame is much bigger with a larger diameter... and they only just fit inside the metal cut-outs already in the door.

Oh, and managed to fit the Dynamet yesterday too... :-)

theyre the same as my door builds too, very easy to do, I had the tweeters in my doors cards at the top but they were too close to your ears and sounded harsh even turned down so I moved them into the A pillers which sounds much better and spreads the sound stage way out in front of the car and lifts it too. I used some tweeter mounts and some focal badges to fill the hole in.

Cool, thanks for your input.
TBH, i do have concerns about the location of the holes but i really just want to get them installed quickly!

I'm sure you have a good idea how long it takes to install two sets of speakers, and amp and do all the wiring too. I've just got to the point where i want to finish the job... it's damn cold outside, and don't have a garage (just a shed!) and it's tough work working out in the freezing cold with a torch.

Anyway, we'll see... the crossovers are tunable, so if necessary i can always reduce the treble. The are also installed with directional mounts to i could alway face them towards the windscreen rather than in your face.

I'm trying desperately to get it finished for the NPOC ACE cafe meet this coming Saturday... but still got to make the MDF spacers for the mids and do all the wiring for the fronts - fresh wiring into the door, then into the crossover and to both the mids and tweets.

:)
