Simple Mechanics...perhaps?

Hi all,

When im driving along the motorway (or should i say anywhere, travelling slightly over 70mph) my steering wheel starts to vibrate and its starting to annoy me now.

I have tightened the front wheel nuts incase they were loose. But im no mechanic  and I really need to fix it.

Any ideas on what i can check next? could it be warped brake discs causing it?

Cheers in advance. :respect:

Could be a few things mate, maybe something as simple as balancing, which would wouldn't cost much to get it done at a tyre shop :)

Its not tracking. mostly probably wheel balance, tyre pressure, damaged tyre or excessively out of true wheel.

Swap your rear and front wheels around and see what happens...oh and unevenly or over tightened wheel nuts can also cause it.

And try searching next time!!

more than likely balancing, mine did it when i first bought mine. Just take it down to a tyre place, wont cost you much.

its your tyres mate i had tje same problem you may think.yeah they look ok like i did then slapped some goodyear eagles on the front and wowww!!! the difference was unbelivable
its been brought up before and people had said no my tyres are fine but you cant realy see the whole tyre and wear happening going on you will be suprised and at the end of the day theres no excuse to whack some new rubber on mate your feel a different car when you do,you pay for waht you get i stuck two new goodyear eagles on the front of mine cost £150 and that was fitted and on the cheap and balanced etc.. standard gti alloys aswell but must say what a difference all round.

As said, it could be tracking, warped disks, etc.. but I would say most probably balancing. Happens quite often with me having to have them redone, just had the backs done about a month ago as the back was shaking like mad at anything over 60. My local garage do them for about £2.50 a wheel so a cheap fix, not a DIY job tho, unless you have a wheel balancing equipement in your shed/garage.

Thanks very much guys.

Im on a half day today so ill just nip in the shower and shed up to my local dreery faced tyre guy and tell him to get it fixed.

ill let you know the fault when it gets fixed.

cheers again.

Just back from the tyre place...

They didnt even bother checking the balance. Instead they fitted two new front tyres as per Steve o gti's suggestion.

So hopefully that is the problem sorted. Just need to give it a booting along the M9 to test!

And a final thank you for all your help/suggestions

how come you have to have it done regularly you hit curbs a lot or park up a curb? i dont really see why your wheels would come unbalanced regularly for no reason.

95% certain its wheel balancing

One tyre was just legal (about 3mm of the limit mark) and the dude said that if i replaced one and the other one being reasonably worn it would also have an adverse effect. So just got new ones.

And no I do not hit kerbs. I think i have only ever hit one kerb in all my time driving.

Also to quote mr d0b0:

"i dont really see why your wheels would come unbalanced regularly for no reason."

They dont unbalance regularly, I spoke to the previous owner of the car and they say that it has been that way for as long as they remember. So i come to the conclusion that they were never properly balanced in the first place!

Gave it a good tanking a wee while ago and its absolutely fine now

yeh sorry i should have made it more clear i was asking gnuoynomis was just wondering
I have no idea why. Answers on a postcard please . The roads are terrable around here, pot holes everywhere it seems to be, try to avoid most of them. Only rubbed against the kurb once or twice when parking in a mega tight space but are fine after I did it. They just seem to become unbalanced quite easily. The weights are still on them as you can see them as I have checked everytime it happens. Happened on my last car too so nothing to do with the wheels on this car. Have to have the front ones done at least twice a year as it shakes so much.
