Smoothing Boot

One of the first mods I'd like to do to my mera is smooth the boot, I've seen a few allready done and it looks awesome so im definatly thinking of going that direction.

Im planning on doing the work myself with the help of college technicians (brush up on my welding) and then mayber fiberglass/filler the leftovers before getting it sprayed.

One thing I wondered was.. as my mera, and i assume all - have an inside boot release why does no-one seam to de-lock the boot? unless there is some major issue against it im planning on doing it.

I think ill use a 2nd boot for this, Just incase - As i really dont know what it'll turn out like but either way its worth a go!

cheers.

Think most people do - only reason I didn't was to retain some way of getting into the car after I'd de-locked the front doors (if the battery dies for example)

The lock on the tailgate's inconspicuous enough to get away with leaving it in (I thought) and it's handy for just throwing stuff in the boot

ok fair enough.

The fact that the boot will probs be full of ice and there being no lock for some bastard to break into it from is just an added bonus i suppose.

Aye, that was my thinking at first ... then I decided everything up front was more valuable

btw - is it just my laptop playing silly buggers or has CarDomain lost my piccies ?? :(

that looks awesome dude! did you do it yourself?

If so or even if not, Any tips? Also - whats the bootlid actually made from? its not alluminium is it? :S

Nope, pressed steel all the way :D

Got it all done at a bodyshop my mates had used before cos it wasn't quite as straight forward as yours will be - there was a little *incident* where this dry-stone wall jumped into the back of the car cracking the top of the bumper (flushed out for recess) and putting a nice crease in the boot up to the window seal level (again, all flushed out) :O

The 2nd exhaust - which was never fitted in the end - had a cut out moulded into the bumper to match the other side (Naylor's was the inspiration for this one) and the no. plate recess is the one from the tailgate with the lip trimmed down and flushed

As I understand it, it's just a plate welded across (cut to match the small step where the no. plate recess starts) and then filler to smooth out the edges and give it a slight curve to match the profile of the boot

Give it a go, even if it all goes horribly wrong it's nothing a bodyshop can't put right :D

Oh yeah - watch out for the wiring loom when you're welding it up - that was another amusing *incident*

as i said i'll be doing it all on a seperate boot in a workshop rather than "on-car" so hopefully i'll be able to get a better idea of whats going on, and more importantly how everything is working as i dont really know a great deal about cars..

Luckily i have 3 good friends who are all mechanics :D

Erm .......

Can't remember actually :O

It was the Scorpion backbox - think they only did one - inwardly rolled

I left mine because of 'issues' where the car would randomly lock itself, most of the time with the keys in, as the master fob only unlocks the car this wouldnt work, as the car 'thought' it was open, so you needed to lock it before you could open it, leaving the only other access point being the lock in the boot(no door locks), I must of climbed in my boot loads of times, flat batterys, locked keys etc etc, it does look better without it though

If your gonna do the work yourself, its worth working out where you are gonna mount the number plate after.

Pretty sure most of the people on here have had their rear number plate surround moulded into there rear bumper by bodyshops, which doesn't look like an easy job to do yourself.

Number plate is gonna need to be lit, or you'll get in trouble with the law.

Looks really good when done, and i could probably do the bootlid, its just the number plate bit that has always put me off.

Cheers,

Wilksy

thats a good point, Im pretty lucky though as i have unlimited access to wood/metal/plastics workshops at college so i can try a bit of fibreglassing, if all fails i'll re-create a bumper from wood and then either form it or fibreglass it.

A good little adventure me thinks :)

Just give the Wooden bumper a good coat of Ronseal & Bolt that back on mate :)

i have my boot smoothed and havent got the lock on it, it does look better without but i have the locks in the door still just incase, thankfully my doors havent started locking themselves yet! im looking into getting locks and handles smoothed but im definately going to have some sort of backup to get into the car before i do. as for the number plate i have mine cable tied to my back splitter atm with no light on it, still looking for somehwere to do a recess in my bumper, and i havent been pulled for it yet, guess it just depends what the police are like in your area.

oh yeah by the way, you after a spare boot ;) http://www.almeraownersclub.com/newforums/showthread.php?t=7190
