Sort of noob from Bedfordshire

Hi AOC, (again...)

I have been a member before when I first bought my Almera but other commitments meant time was limited to do anything serious. My apologies to admin for now having two accounts but I can't for the life of me remember any details I used. My email address certainly didn't seem to be recognised.

So, why am I back? Well, after around 3 years hard work, I am now ready to look at a project. My faithful 1999 N15 GTi is in need of a bit of a facelift and I want to treat her to a transplant as well.

Lots to consider but if you're going to be a bear, be a grizzly, I always say so I'm heading off to Southend tomorrow to go and see Bob at Gti-r-us to talk engines, and other bits.

No decisions made just yet but I'll keep you all informed...

Thanks and good to be back!

M

Easiest ain't the general road I take! ;-)

Hey, it's true that it may be easier to do on my drive but... I'm too long in the tooth to be spending nights on my back under cars. Done plenty of that when I was driving mkII escorts!

I'm looking to do this little project properly. Got some cash behind me and paying the pros is worth it. Any input is truly welcome. Pros are fine but enthusiasts are worth their weight in gold! What would you do with a standard gti?

My idea is - huge bhp, proper mods to cope, (don't want to blow gearboxes right?!), nice subtle paint job, interior last...

Get me? ;-)

M
(Seriously, what would you guys do with a standard '99 gti that's getting a touch tired?)

Rust, if a rebuild is what you want then build a GTi up keeping 10:1CR. GT3076R turbo with supporting mods. Primera P11-144 gearbox rebuilt with new bearings and a quaife diff. Meister Coilovers, 4 pot brakes, underbraces and antiroll bars and full poly bushes. S14 leather interior. P2 GTi bodykit. Respray in Red.

That should keep you busy for a while.

I've seen plenty on here get turbos fitted by the "Pro's" save your cash and just fit the standard turbo bits yourself.

I'm sure there's list on site somewhere of exactly what you'll need but as a rough idea off the top of my head

Turbo mani
Turbo
Oil feed and return lines
Water feed and return lines
Related fittings for feed lines above
Bigger injectors
Turbo elbow and downpipe
Cat back exhaust big enough to suit down pipe
Intercooler and related pipework and joiners
BOV
Engine management to map the lot
Uprated clutch
Some form of induction kit
Uprated engine mounts(not essential but definitely worth doing)

Upping the power is all well and good though but make sure the car is set up well to cope with the power.

Make sure brakes are all operational with new pads, discs, braided lines and full flush with new fluid.

Poly bush all chasis bushings (energy suspension have the full kit for approx €200 delivered including mounts I believe)

Coilovers or at the very least good quality dampers and springs

That's just a guidline off the top of my head, I'm sure there's plenty I've missed. Like the lads said though, your stock running gear should be plenty sufficient to boost as many on this site alone have done with great results and reliability
