Sound proofing

Hey :)

I was just wondering roughly how much Dynamat type stuff (as in sq feet) I would need to cover the floor, side panels and boot of my GTi? I haven't got a clue how much I would need and the noise of my exhaust at 3500rpm is deafening!

Also, does anyone know the best place to buy from?

Thanks in advance

Ask Rowdy_GTi, he bought his black GTi off black_ice, who had put £500 worth of dynamat in the back for his ICE.

its not extremely expensive like, you can get different types of it, can get it from your local motor world halfords maybe etc..

Throw down as much as you like lol.. but as corbs says, Rowdy will be better asking about that, I sound proofed my VTS, but got it done professionsally....

I was too looking to buy some of this on my old monty turbo - Tin can! you can hear every stone you go over!!

Putting that stuff in will increase weight thus slow you down, each to their own tho, Have you tried Ebay?? always different brands kicking around on there by the roll. Dunno how the different brands differ though. Dynamat seems to be the common also Brown bread. Think you can get it in a spray form too, which would be alot easier to do the different parts i.e no cutting.

Depending how dead you want it you might do few layers? What do others think? ;)

ahh yeah, mine was a few layers, it cant add too much weight really...

I got mine by the roll and the lad who tinted my windows fitted it all, done a class job and god did it make a difference!!! Made my sound system sound waaaaaay better and also stopped outside noises getting in and visa versa..

Id defo recommend you getting it done if your into it..

Dynomat extreme is the stuff I used, its really good stuff imo. It does add weight though, you can get a boot kit and that weighs around 12-15kg, so thats not too bad but when you start double skinning it thats when you will notce the extra weight

buy a bmw if you want a quiet car or get a better exhaust for your car sound's like you have a boy racer special if its that loud at 3500rpm, i have a scorpion system and i drive 50 miles a day but it makes a noise when you want it to not all the time

Hey everyone :)

Thanks very much for all your advice! The reason I'm not really looking to get a bigger silencer or new back box is because, basically, I'm skint! So I don't want to put a crap one on there, when the one that's on it is decent.

@ Shaun: Yeah the exhaust is a bit boy racery, I bought it with that on, but didn't notice that noise when I test drve (still wouldn't have put me off though ;)) It's not nearly as bad as it could be though - it's quiet most of the time on short commutes etc, but when I'm sitting at 80 on the motorway, and it's slightly uphill, that's when you hear it.

Done a bit of research...Dynamat (imho) is overpriced, and not really designed for keeping out road noise...it was made with speaker systems in mind, so for that it's great, but after looking at a load of reviews, it's not great at damping road noise.

Brown bread was the obvious 2nd choice, but, again, it's more for speaker systems, although it is better than Dynamat for road noise - and a lot lighter!

Eventually, on a little forum in the back of beyond, I found a few threads about SecondSkin. I looked this up, and according to reviews (not from the people trying to sell it!) it's way better than Dynamat and Brown Bread - and also less expensive. Plus I've got a mate who works for a company who sells it, so I'll get mate's rates ;)

Figured out I'll need about 20sq ft for lining the boot, but ideally I want to do the floors too. Seems like an acheivable price at about £70 for 40 sq ft ;)

Sorry for the long thread, but I thought this info may be of use to someone else at some point in the future :D

Thanks again for the advice!

im gonna wait for people to laugh, but ........
LOFT INSULATION !
Cheap and affective !

u can get the insulation bords but arent they about an inch thick??? otherwise very cheap and easy to cut up. Also there quiet giving and not very durable
worth a try tho

thanks for all your help guys :) I'm going to go with this SecondSkin stuff...it's designed for keeping road noise out, so hopefully it should do the trick! will have to wait til next payday to order, but will keep you posted :)

its not identical. it doesnt work as good. and some of it stinks when it gets hot(like in the summer)
it is cheaper though
