Speedometer and takometer problems

Hi there

I´ve just bought an Almera - year 1996 - 1600 ccm.

My problem is that the speedometer and also my takometer is acting very funny. The speedometer only works half the time. Half the time the needle is non-responsive, and then all of the sudden it works just fine - and then it dies on me again.

The takometer is showing full revs most of the time, and every once in a while its showing somewhere betwen 5000 to 7000 RPM - but never below that.

I´m wondering if perhaps there is some electrical problem causing both the speedometer and takometer to mailfunction.

Is there anyone out there who has experienced the same problem. I would really love to get some advise.
Usually i´m a very technically oriented guy, but I dont know where to start on this one.

I'd say it may be a dodgy connection at the back of the clocks, my old GTi did this occasionally. Could be the PCB coming away from the clocks themselves?

I think its a bad earth, i have this exact problem at the moment. I have checked behind and everythings intact, and the reading from the ECU is correct, but somewhere between the ECU and the Tachometer there is a problem on mine.

had same prob with my speedo lately, turned out the connecteor on the top of the gear box was loose. speed sensor i believe. give that a looking at

Hey and thanks for the responce everyone. Very nice to get some feedback.

sri_alan, you mentioned checking the output signal from the ECU. How do you go about doing that?
I am for the time being an engineering student, and thus my butget is at an all time low. I´m hoping for some simple do-it-yourself technique, whereby I can avaoid expensive professional help. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Due to a water leakage into the car, I´m bound to remove the entire dashboard sooner or later - which will give me the oppurtunity to fully examine the clocks. But it would be nice to do some troubleshooting before that. Just to get an idea on which parts to order. My country is extremely small and miscellaneous parts are hard to come by. Allmost everything has to be ordered from abroad, and the delivery time can be several weeks.

Again, thanks for the respons

if you have water leaking behind the dash then I would say a connection has shorted.....

I have the same issue but its just the tachometer thats gone completely nuts and bounces around the clock! My almera is a phase.1 '96 ga14de saloon.. Can Anyone let me know if its a faulty rev sensor needing replacement because iv checked the wires and there fine.. I took out the instrument panel, took it apart and find nothing wrong with it... It has been annoying me for the best part of the past year.. It worked grand beforehand!!
Just as an extra note my engine does burn oil and is fairly sick tbh.. Would this affect the tacho? The speedometer is working perfect

Probly best quick fix for it.. The woman has a phase.2 almera so i quickly swap them when she not looking and see if it makes any difference ha! Thanks

I dont know about the GA's but i know the GTi's, phases cant be swapped because one is mechanical and the other is digital....i think! all i know is if you put a ph2 into a ph1 it goes bang

Oh... Bit 2much of a chance so.. Dont wanna end up Fuckin both up!ha ah i jus wait til i come across a decent phase.1 to get clocks out of.. How can i tel the difference between mechanical and digital?

have a similar problem on an Almera 98 (p1) GX. all gauges on instrument panel are gone. I checked connectors & cables. no Joy. I would like to do a earth test between panel & E8. Can anyone tell me where to find E8. It is beside ECM. I cannot find details in Haynes manual.
