SSS/GTi Steering Wheel Problem

***FOR THE PURPOSES OF THIS THREAD***

AN AUDM SSS HAS THE SAME STEERING WHEEL AS A UKDM GTi

SLX IS FLAGSHIP MODEL OF THE SEDAN SERIES

PLUS/LX IS BASE MODEL OF THE PULSAR SERIES

Ok, I have a problem...

I bought a SSS Steering wheel a couple of months ago and I want to put it into my N15s2 Plus Sedan which already has an airbag steering wheel in it.

I have read a couple of threads about SSS steering wheels and I had the idea that it would be a case of deactivating my Plus's airbag, taking off the airbag and steering wheel, and putting on the new SSS steering wheel on a re-activating the new air bag, but I have come to the realization that my steering wheels are very different.

NOTE: The steering wheel off my SLX which is identical to my Plus steering wheel, with the exception of being leather wrapped.

This is the original steering wheel on my car. (regular SLX/PLUS/LX s2 airbag wheel)

This is the new SSS wheel with the airbag removed.

So, when I went to plug in the plugs to the SSS wheel, I found that there was only one plug for the horn on the rotary connector, and the airbag plug is absent. I now know that the airbag module in the that is in the SLX wheel is the missing link in the SSS wheel.

Can I swap over the airbag module from my unused SLX?

Is the SSS wheel from a dual airbag SSS? (hence the absence of the module on the wheel)

How else can I get this to work?

Thanks in advance for your help.

IF THERE IS ANYTHING UNCLEAR IN THIS THREAD PLEASE ASK

Cheers

by the looks of it the mounting holes are all the same, just swap everything over from one to the other.

The unit in your wheel is the airbag sensor. Does the SSS come with twin airbags ?? If it does then the airbag sensor is separate and either in the centre console or under one of the seats and triggers both airbags in the event of a crash.

As long as you can get the sensor unit on the SSS wheel and still fit the airbag then I would think everything will work properly.

But i'd recommend bracing yourself when re-connecting the battery/starting the ignition!

I was just about to say, they aren't the same shape, and I have already tried.

If you have another look at the two wheels you can see this

I would have to fabricate a different mounting plate for the module to fit onto. That's why I asked if anyone else had one before I did this...

Thanks tho.

The series 1 SSS had an option of dual airbag, but AFAIK the series 2 did not come with dual airbag.

I had a thought about this one, that the sensor is on board the dash or something...

Thanks again for your help.

Does anyone have this sensor?

There is a plastic disc which sits behind the steering wheel. This disc has got a letter on it on a yellow sticker, think it's something like H for single airbag and F for dual but don't quote me on that. You have to have the right disc for the number of airbags in the car.
You might just need to change this.

Ok, so for those who have followed, I have got an Almera GTi steering wheel airbag module thingy and plugged everything in.

This is what it looked like before.

Thanks for everyones help.

well done buddy, nice one.

Thanks mate.

I think it looks a lot nicer and it feels better too.

Our summer over here regularly yields days with temperatures over 35 degrees, and it has started to degrade the top of my stock non-leather steering wheel. This is a nice change. ;)

Yeah, I have a reflective cover for it, but it had started to degrade before I got the car so it had just started to break down more... It wasn't much, but just enough for me to notice it...
