starter motor

i will do, how hard would you say it is though? any problems you ran into? there must be some people on here who have done this.

Ok doml89, did mine last week, assume same as Gti, it is the most awkward to do.
If car is alarmed or central locking keep key in your pocket.
Disconnect battery.
If air pipework is same as Gti, then there is a mounting bracket attatched to the engine block, with a hole cut out to allow you to put a socket extension thru to acsses the top starter bolt, it is fiddly but is only way. put socket onto bolt first as socket will not fit thru hole. you may have more room to work with from above than the Gti.
My mechanic removed and replaced starter from underneath, the only way.
Gti has front anti-roll bar which has to be loosened at 1 end + swung out of the way.
Job went well + took 1.5 hrs.
Good luck.
The worst part woz paying £200+vat for the starter from LSUK + that was for exchange unit . Paid £40 for fitting which i didn't mind.

yeh iv got a gti. it cost you £200 for a new starter motor?!
i dont understand what you ment, did you do it or did a mechanic? does the anti roll bar have to be tighten to a certain torque? how many bolts is there holding the starter motor on because youv only mentioned one there? is it not posible to lift it out then, or can you only get it out from under niether?

doml89, I know a mechanic who uses his garage as workshop, used to work for Halfords + AA. i take car there or he comes out to my place if car is not running.
Starter motor has 2 bolts.
If you dismantle + remove several items from around the back of the engine then i suppose it may be possible to remove the starter from the top, but whatever, you have to get underneath to get to the second bolt, some garages may try to tell you that the job will be 4 hrs coz they say you can do it from top, they then take the inlet manifold off. up to you but the nissan sunny 2.0e Gti that i had was just the same, you have to do it from underneath. lot less pi**in about.
The motor from Sunny will not fit Almera, half inch difference.
Not sure bout anti-roll bar, maybe other members will know. i just tightened mine. Ta

The GA engine is really easy to work on ( compared to the sr20 anyway ) so you may be able to do it from the top.

2x 14mm bolts, 2x12mm bolts 1 x 10mm nut 20- 30 max it should take you.
Also you don't have to remove the anti roll bar or any pipe work to get it out.

i have a gti so its an sr20 that its on.
im just trying to get hold of one for a decent price at the min, so when i get it ill see how i go with fitting.
cheers guys.

Dear Tech1 uk, I know that i'm only a newbie + i don't mean to be insubordanate + i wish you a merry Christmas, but, i have attempted to give doml89 as much explanation on what he will poss face while attempting the removal of the starter on the SR20DE.
There are only 2 bolts on the starter, you mention 2 others + a nut without any explanation on where doml89 will find them.
You next say that there's no need to remove the anti-roll bar, well i assisted my mechanic in the work + he took the nut off 1 end of the anti-roll bar + swung it out of the way to gain better acsess to the starter, i also watched the same job being done twice on my Sunny 2.0e Gti + again job was done from underneath.
Now i don't want to look a knob + i also dont want to print incorrect information to confuse other members. If you know of an easier way to do the sarter on the SR20DE Phase 2 Gti, then i would be grateful for your knowledge.
Hopefully doml89 will let me know how he gets on.
Either way i hope the job is sucssesfull. Ta.

For some reason I can't up load a photo ! I'll sort that later. There are 2 x 14mm bolts holding the starter motor to the bell housing of the gearbox. One you can get to from the top using a 14mm fexi spanner and the other has to be done from under the vehicle. One the back of the engine block there is a bracket that is helded on with 2 x12mm bolts. this has to be removed. Disconnect the connector goting to the starter switch, then there is a 12mm nut that holds the main power supply onto the starter motor, disconnect the battery negtive cable first. once the starter bolts have been removed turn the starter 180 deg drop the back down and lift it over the drive shaft and drop it down between the exhaust and anti roll bar.

When replacing it torque the starter bolts bolts to 31-42nm and 22nm for the bracket and 18nm for the nut.

Dear Tech1 uk, thats sort of what i said. lol.
cant get it right every time.
doml89 should be ok with that. I could ave done with that last week.
Thanks.
