Stretched timing chain or piston knock? Either way can I drive?

Hi new to the forum.

Sorry I know little about cars.

I need advice if that is OK?

I bought a nissan almera 2005 1.5 from a trader and 15 minutes into my journey home I noticed a rattling noise coming from the engine. Any way long story short I don't hear it until I've drove the car for 5/10 minutes probably because it's now warmed up,and then I hear it over 2000 revs. I've had 2 mechanic look under the bonnet, ran and revved the engine. 1 says it is the timing chain (but he wasn't sure) and the other says it's the piston knocking.

Now if it's the chain I've been told to just drive it, it's safe and won't snap. It will just eventually stop starting and stall. Is this true?

If it's the pistons then I've been told it's dangerous and totally knackered.

The nois/rattle isn't really bad but it's there.

Any advise please be gore I pump any money into it or just write it off?

Ps I've taken the trader to trading standards but hit a dead
end.

Cheers in advance

Chris

The 1.5l engine is notorious for chain stretching, could be the loose chain rattling inside the chain cover. There is a plate you can remove from the chain end of the engine to check how far the tensioner piston has extended, iirc it has been said that if it's extended by 10mm or more the chain will need replacement.

If you can, upload a sound or video sample of it.

Hi Thanks for your reply.

i'm suspecting this is the case and i am taking it to a garage tomorrow that said they'd look at it for free. As i only paid £600 for the car i don't want to throw any more money at it. If it is the chain from what I've read i could drive it until it fails and it is safe, is this the case?

i just don't want it to blow up on me lol i would avoid motorways and hills just until just until i can save up and get a car with no faults.

everything tells me it is the chain but is there any way of knowing if it is piston knock? i've heard it is dangerous to drive in this condition?

ps i will try and get a video up :)

cheers chris
