Thinking of trying an Almera GTI (Currently own a Primera GT)

Hi all,

As some of you may have done this already i was just wondering what you think would be the benefits or drawbacks to going from a Primera GT to a Almera GTI (Both would be R reg)?

I've had my Primera for just over a year and i like it but a cheap Almeria GTI has got me thinking as my Primera is a saloon and is useless for getting anything in the back of, but is fun to drive. I'm a bit worried about rear seat access in the Almera, but think being a bit smaller it could be more fun to drive?

Is the clutch relatively easy to do (i replaced the clutch on my GT and although it to a day it wasn't too bad)?

Would there be any benefit it breaking my GT and putting the engine and gearbox in the GTI?

Before anyone who is an NPOC member notices and asks i was a member but decided not to renew or use the forum for reasons that i don't wish to discuss, so please don't ask or comment.

Welcome

The cars will be very similar engine and gearbox wise so the clutch should be almost identical to replace.

My old mum can get in and out the back of mine with little trouble. Legroom is surprisingly good in the back.

Rear strut brace limits the seats-down carrying space though still miles more than a saloon.

Thanks,

That was my understanding but thought I'd check. If I do this I may decide to just swap the whole engine and box (is the gearbox the same?) as it may be quicker and easier, depends if I decide to try breaking the Primera and scrapping what's left or sell the car on.

Thanks,

I'm guessing it'll be OK, I didn't think about the possibility of it having a rear brace but it can't possibly be any worse than my saloon. I do like it but it's useless at being able to carry anything.

Thanks for the replies,

If the car in question is still about on Friday I might got take a look at it, I'm just a bit worried about getting a smaller car. It needs a clutch and has a problem with the tacho (reads high) but otherwise looks OK.

P11 box has different final drive, you'll to swap the mount over aswell. P11 also uses different injectors so you'd need to use the P11 ecu set ect, i dont know if the ecus have the same pin layout though.

Yeah they are. But more on the different list are...

Dizzy
Alternator
Engine Earths

Question is, why swap them at all? Is the GT engine heavily modified?
Fair point,

The car i'm looking at needs a clutch and I replaced the one in the Primera 6 months ago. I did it and it was an OK job but my thinking was would it be easier to do a straight swap and thn just strip anything worth selling from the Primera as it's probably only worth a few hundred and that would work out better than spending £100 on a clutch and spending a day fitting it. But from what's being said here it probably would be easier just to replace the clutch.

I think there are some differences the cam's are a different profile and the injectors, but if it means messing around with the ecu and the possibility of having alarm or immobiliser issues its going to be more hassle than its worth. If the gearbox ratios are different then it's going to cause other problems with wheel sizes and speedo readings, that's something I can't be bothered trying to figure out either.
