Timing chain?

Hi, am posting this for a family member..

He has a 2001 1.5 almera..

The eml light is on, it mentions the camshaft sensor

Each day its a hit or miss were it will start in the morning, if it doesnt fire up it needs towed.Once its been running its ok.

Ive seen the odd post were timing chain is mentioned, but theres no rattle/timing chain slap noise

How common are the sensors for being faulty, any other known issues with these engines?

Chains dont rattle on QG's even if chain is stretched. To check chain for stretch, remove the rocker cover and upper timing chain cover and measure/look at how far the chain tensioner plunger is protruding...10mm or more than it's replacement time.Sensors can play up,but when the chain does needs replacing,it normally throws up the camshaft sensor code.

If you have any misfiring/juddering or jumpy rev needle, then that's also a sign that it's the chain.

You could also swap the cam sensor for crank sensor and see if the fault code follows suit, the sensors are interchangeable.

Trying to start it , turning over can hear it trying to fire...

The top timing chain tensioner is right out, all the signs are there.. It was jumpy, rev needle jumping etc..

Is there anything I can do to help get it started, except towing?
