Hi all, just when do you need to change the timing/cam chain on a petrol 1.8 04 Tino ,have done 46,000 and it runs fine , a mechanic said i should change when it hits 50,000 ,but do you get any warning signs before it needs doing and is it easy'ish to check it out at all ....am strapped for cash so a big bill would take me under !!!

You shouldn't need to change it. If it does start to stretch you'll notice loss of power, sluggish etc. but I don't think the later engines and especially the 1.8's had an issue with the chain.

I wouldn't trust that mechanic doing any work for me if he thinks a chain is a service item.

Thanks for the replies , can rest easy a bit now...........he quoted me £500-£600 if i wanted it doing ,half the value of the motor , he will not be seeing my handsome mush again ,thanks again lads.
