Tips on spraying.

Hey all ive dug the compressor out of the loft so i can respray my new bumpers, any tips on spraying with a gun, syphon type, not gravity fed.

So far on the bumpers ive sorted any laquar peel, by feathering the edges and smoothing it, then a full rub down with 600 grit wet n dry paper. Chemical key spray so the paint sticks better.

Any tips for actually spraying apart from keeping the gun parallel to the job?

the paint is fairly thin, as is the top coat so i think i should only need a splash of thinners if any at all.

Being metallic is there a nack for getting a good finish, spray in only one direction, not back and forth, that sort of thing?

and advice helpful, thanks.

Paul

Tried this myself and made a god-awful job of it (first attempt, though, so understandable) - could not get the new paint to blend with the existing paint at all (Nissan Tornado Grey).

The advice from the professionals I had look at it to fix it was that I did as good a job as they would have done trying to only spray patches and that the only way to do it properly was to spray whole panels.

Not sure if that applies in your case but worth thinking about if you get it on and it does not match up.

Seconded, I have made the mistake of trying myself and its gone horribly wrong. I am now left needing two front wings spraying in the same colour and also my rear arch! It aint worth doing though my car is being broken for parts in a few weeks!

the bumpers and skirts are in tropical green and going BS7 marine blue so hopefully it should look ok being sprayed completely.

use a proper primer for the colour your going to spray, light travels through paint and reflects off primer giving you your proper colour, like how candy colours work.

paint gun in fluid motions, start spraying before sweeping across the bit to be painted and carry on past to prevent build ups of paint at beginings or ends. keep the gun level and the same distance away at all times. I find spraying in one direction helps as it seems to be easier to keep the gun steady etc

and where i always go wrong, dont try to put to much on at once, build up the coats slowly

Make sure the car part is protected from the environment i.e wind and dust. Mask off a lot, the last thing you want is paint spray on the wrong parts, oh and wear breathable mask! Everything else has already been said...

Metallic:

50% overlap throughout, one grip coat followed by two wet coats follwed by a drop coat.

So one lightish coat, two full coats and a drop coat (drop spraying pressure to 1.5 bar and spray from 18" away) Should do you proud.

Remember to tack cloth off after the dropcoat and prior to the laquer.

cheers everyone :)

schnakey, what do you mean by tack cloth off after the dropcoat and prior to the laquer?

whats a tack cloth?

im using a compressor, celly colour and 1K clear coat.

quick mention on rattle cans, did a mates corsa GSI spoiler today, wow is it hard to get teh paint looking even! Sticking to the gun now lol
