I was (and nearly bought) going to buy a Nissan Almera 1.5 SX, and was hoping to get a bit more info from your guys around here. I’d read a few reviews on What Car claiming problems with the timing chain.
Anyway, took it for a test drive yesterday afternoon, and hated it. I’ve had an Astra (G) club for over four years which has been a good car. I’ve put over 80,000 miles on it in that time and never had an issue, hence I need a reliable car that’s comfortable. I probably spend an average of 3 hours a day in my car. Also, over the years I’ve been spoilt with company cars and driven loads of cars, Ford, Vauxhall and Peugeot. So I’d say I have a fair idea of what to expect with motors.

On paper the Nissan Almera ticked all the boxes; the price was less than its Vauxhall equivalent, fairly priced at £5995, two year old with only 17,000 on the clock. With my trade in and discounts I’d Have had to pocket out about £4,500. So with all considered it sounded like a good choice.

However, the test drive. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not here to cause trouble in this forum, I had genuine interest but that Almera had the most shocking driving position I’ve ever known. I really thought it was horrible. So then took out a Astra (H) for a test drive, which OK, a common average car, but in a different league to the Almera. Needless to say I’m picking up an Astra next week. Granted its £1000 more but I think worth every penny.

So, Hello and Goodbye, Thanks but.....No thanks.

Never driven an N16 before, so can't really compare i'm afraid.

I have the N15 (the earlier model) and love it, but I am also heading towards going for an astra (diesel) as I need the better mpg and cheap tax!

Where abouts in Doncaster are you from?

I live near Askern...The N16 would probably make an good/affordable/reialble(so I'm told) 'run-er-around' but everything just felt wrong to me.

And yeah...the astra is cheaper to tax, and should do me about 42-43 mpg, safe bet car, can't really go wrong.

I have driven an N16 1.5 before an i hated it too something did feel right! Maybe because renault had a big hand in the building of it!

N15 GTI FTW! You drive one of those and trust me youd love it!

....Except for the fact that in your mind, you and everyone around you knows you drive a Vauxhall :superlol:

And the fact the Astra, is built just down the road from me..and by the biggest bunch of cowboy scousers you will ever know.

Good luck :)

So, the whole point of this thread was to inform us that you`re NOT becoming a member.

What a waste of time!

Also, you`ve had astras before, & are getting another one, hmmm, closed mindedness springs to mind.

OK, so you looked @ an N16 & didn`t like it, & immediately jumped back into what you know, did we even have to be made aware of this?

i personally wouldnt stray from nissans though, and you stuck with almeras etc, we all do it to a point imo.

cant blame you for not liking the n16 tbh, dont see the appeal of an astra either but they sell well so i must be missing something, is a bunch of pissed scousers building them though

Vauxhalls are shit. I dont care what spec, age, power, price, loyal following, Holden-rebadging, Opel European extras or mad engine swaps you throw at me, they're just shit. Bad grey interiors, shit plastics, appauling build quality, shit paint finishes circa 1993-2000, shit upholstery longevity, massively overrated and deadly in a crash if you have anything post 2004.

Luton Logs. All of them.

I once had an Astra on loan from my insurance company whilst mine was being repaired after being rear-shunted. Must admit - that car put me totally off the Astra (not that I liked it much in the first place) it was a horrible thing to drive and was so very pleased to get my N16 back! I've been a Nissan lover for years - having started with a Sunny, following on with a Bluebird and now the Almera (which I have now had for 7 years).

Must admit, will always stick with Nissan.

I had an Astra G 2.0 SRi before the N15 GTi I currently own and although the Astra was ok, the almera (imo) is much better (and faster).

everyone at my work has an astra... and they don't like my car cause its "Jap Crap"

Never had a problem with mine...

They have had broken throttle bodies, egr valves everything...

and my cars crap huh?

Well I'm glad someone was able to defend (sort of ) the N16. It gets a lot of stick around here... even though this is it's owners club :p :D

To be fair i have an N16 and in terms of styling it might not be the nicest. But in terms of running costs i can't fault mine. Yer its never gonna be an N15 GTi but both are 2 completely different cars and aimed and 2 different markets. Personally i stil prefer my P10 Primera but seeing as fuel is so darn expensive along with tax and insurance its about making do with what money you have. And tbh even though i prefer the primeras the N16 almera i found is so easy to drive.
