Trouble starting ! / Steering collum & Ignition barrel fault.

Hi all,

Wondering if anybody else is having this same problem.

Occasionally I'll turn the key and get nothing - while the immobiliser light still flashed.

This is a 2004 N16. I've tried the spare key as I thought it may have been the battery but it did the same thing.

While at Nissan the other day with a o2 sensor problem, I mentioned my problems and they told me it was a common problem on the N16.

Apparently the fix involves a re-designed bracket, to stop the ignition barrel moving about lots when the steering wheel is moved with the steering lock on. I asked the service manager if this was down to wear and tear to which he told me no.

In my opinion therefore, with it not being wear and tear, and the face they had to re-design a bracket to fix it - i believe this is something that should probably have been recalled/repaired under warranty as they have apparently known about it for some time.

Now they want £250 to fir the new bracket and i'm reluctant to pay it !

Anybody else have this problem or had this fix ?

Thanks,

Leon

I've recently had a similar kind of issue with my N16, although I am aware of the problem.

I used to keep my keys near devices which cause interference (i.e. mobile phone), then tried to fire up the beast but the immobiliser kicked in and wouldn't let me (immobliser flashing stops and stays on constant). By this time I had realised that the interference probably scrambled my key coding etc.

Luckily all I have to do is to take the key out, lock the vehicle, unlock and try again. And so far, it has always worked.

As mentioned, I am aware of this problem and I know I should get it sorted, but Nissan aren't the cheapest place to recode/reset keys !!!

So rather than shelling out a ton, I'll keep doing what I do for now (it only rarely happens anyway).

I've just realised taht I've been babbling on a bit but have not been able to help you with your issue !!!

Sorry !

Hi Red,

Sounds like my problem, locking and unlocking the doors often appeared to help.

The Nissan Mechanic made a very technical test to see if my car has this problem. Remove key from ignition and turn steering wheel till it locks. Then be quite violent with the steering wheel and see if the ignition barrel moves about quite a bit !
