Troubleshooting Intermittent starting problem

Hello all,

Have a weird issue with my N16 Almera (2002) - wonder if anyone can offer advice?

I was actually given the car by a friend, and at the time he told me that it had an intermittent quirk where occasionally he would go to start it and although it would turn over fine it wouldn't fire, but if you sat there and left it for a few mintues and tried again it would always go.

Since I've had it (about a year) it has probably done this about 4 times, and each time I've been able to get it going after a few attempts. At all other times is starts fine every time. A few days ago it wouldn't start again but this time I couldn't get it going at all and half-flattened the battery trying. I recharged and tried again but still nothing. Was all ready to take it in to have someone look at it as I'd run out of things I could think to check but lo and behold I recharged and tried once more this morning and it started! So now I'm not sure whether to use it and possibly get stranded somewhere, or take a functioning car into the garage and see if they can find a fault with it?

Initially after turning it over a few times and failing to start it I pulled all the plugs and cleaned them - all were wet with fuel so don't think it's a fuel issue. All the plugs are obviously fine as are working now. Am thinking intermittent electrical/sensor issue or maybe moisture getting into ignition system somehow? Anyone any ideas how to troubleshoot?

Could be a crank sensor issue. But checking the cam chain would be my first port of call.
Thanks for the advice, I will check the cam chain. I guess you mean check it for stretch? As far as I can tell from reading some other threads I basically take of the side cover and measure the tensioner extension and see if it's 10mm or over?

how would I go about testing the crank sensor?
